Sunday’s Fox network telecast of Super Bowl XLV averaged 111 million viewers, the most-watched championship in the bowl’s 44-year history, making it the most-watched telecast in U.S. history, according to Nielsen Media Research.The Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 to capture the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl Championship.According to Fox News, this was only the second time Pittsburgh lost a Super Bowl. The Steelers still have the most wins with six, and are tied for the most appearances with eight. The crowd at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas included 91,060 paying attendees and 103,219 counting “credentialed attendees.” Green Bay Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named MVP.
The NFL’s Super Bowl tops Forbes’ list of the world’s most valuable sporting event brands, worth $379 million in 2007. Following the Super Bowl are the Summer Olympics at $176 million and soccer’s World Cup at $103 million . Rounding out the top ten is the Daytona 500, Rose Bowl, NCAA Men’s Final Four, Winter Olympics Games, Kentucky Derby, World Series and NBA Finals respectively. Why is the Super Bowl so valuable? Thirty seconds of air time sold for $3 million, up slightly from last year’s $2.97 million, according to Kantar Media. Most other nights of the year, a 30-second prime-time commercial runs between $100,000 and $500,000. Marketers are attracted to the Super Bowl audience because it is huge and viewers are paying attention.
Each year USA Today’s Ad Meter tracks the second-by-second responses of a panel of viewers to the ads during the Super Bowl and ranks them from best to worst. Today’s ads are about using social media before the Big Game to build brand buzz and attract viewers to watch a Super Bowl commercial, then using that spot to redirect viewers back to social media to talk about the brand and the message. Super Gals of Super Bowl ads this year include Kim Kardashian for Skechers, Jillian Michaels & Danica Patrick for GoDaddy and Faith Hill for Teleflora. Supermodel Cindy Crawford has made four Super Bowl ad appearances for Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Cadillac. This year’s National Anthem was belted out by five-time Grammy award-winning singer Christina Aguilera, a native of Rochester, Pennsylvania, a town about forty minutes outside of Pittsburgh and half time festivities featured performances by the Black Eyed Peas. According to Dallasnews.com, Cowboys Stadium owner Jerry Jones’s guest suite hosted several VIP’s including Former President George W. Bush and his wife, Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and film actors Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.
