Want to know more about Nick Gill? This interview is for you!
Q: Who introduced you to music?
Nick: I was introduced to music at the age of 5. My sister was taking piano lessons at the time and I decided to fiddle around with the keys. I learned a few songs by ear and then began piano lessons.
Q: How long have you been performing?
Nick: I started performing in the 5th grade in my high school band, “The GB’s” at the age of 12.
Q: Where was your first big show/venue?
Nick:The first show I played as a solo artist was at a venue in Fairhope, AL called Dr. Music. It’s a record shop/bookstore.
Q: How did you make the decision to move to Nashville?
Nick: At first, I was going to go to college at Belmont in Nashville, but after being declined by the school because of my poor academic scores I decided to just move there anyway to pursue a career in music.
Q: What is it like living on Music Row?
Nick: It is quite an adventure! Everywhere you look there is someone filming or playing a guitar on the street in search of the dream!
Q: Describe your music career.
Nick: Adventurous. Busy. Uplifting. Joyful.
Q: Who are your influences?
Nick: Nirvana, James Taylor, Death Cab for Cutie, John Mayer and The Fray.
Q: What are your short term and long term goals?
Nick: Over the next half a year, I would like to release a record and tour regionally. I would like to move 20,000 units and receive placements in TV as well as substantial airplay. My long term goals include touring Europe and the rest of the world as well as becoming gold certified.
Q: If I were to look on your iPod, what musicians would be on it?
Nick: My current playlist includes: Rogue Wave, Drew Holcomb, Grace Potter, The Civil Wars, Mumford and Sons, The Black Keys, Brandon Heath, The Script, Jane Dear Girls, Eve 6, Bibio, Parachute and Local Natives.
Q: Collaborations are a hot commodity at the moment. Who would you like to collaborate with?
Nick: I would love to collaborate with Ben Gibbard and Norah Jones.
Q: What do you do in your down time?
Nick: If I’m not watching Cash Cab on the Discovery Channel, I’m usually looking for quarters below my dresser so I can wash my clothes in the public washing machines below my apartment complex. I also LOVE hanging out at Fido coffee shop in Nashville!
Q: You are originally from Alabama, what are some of your fondest memories?
Nick: My fondest memories were the most uneventful ones. I loved hanging out in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Daphne in the back of my friend’s pick up truck. We also did a lot of Boggin’ (which is where you take your vehicle through treacherous mud swamps). We got stuck one time and had to get a tow truck in there.
Q: What do you like playing the best: Rock Band, Just Dance, Guitar Hero, Call of Duty Black Ops, etc.?
Nick: GUITAR HERO for sure! Even though my video game skills are mediocre.
Q: What is a day with Nick like?
Nick: A typical day in the life of Nick begins with waking up at 11 am and taking a shower. After that I usually turn on Nickelodeon and check emails. If I’m on tour, I’m usually playing shows every night. If I’m in Nashville, I like to go out and get dinner with people and maybe go to a show.
Q: What projects do you have going on right now?
Nick: I just wrapped up a music video for my song, ‘By the Way’. The video should be out within a few months. I’m also working on pre-production for my next record.
Q: What advice would you give to someone going into the music business?
Nick: I would say that when it comes time for a musician to record a cd and release it, try to do ALL the promo/marketing work you can do by yourself AND if someone offers to manage/promo you for money, it’s usually to good to be true. Make sure you read every contract before you sign it! Don’t let negative reviews of your music bring you down.
Q: Are you a dashboard drummer or an air guitar picker?
Nick: Dashboard drummer all the way. I drum on anything I can get a sound out of. I used to get sent to the principal’s office for drumming on the desks.
Q: What are you looking forward to the most in the coming months?
Nick: I’m looking forward to my 4th album!
Last Question: What is one thing your fans don’t know about you that you are willing to share?
Nick: I can make a really, really loud clicking noise with my tongue.
