As your driving towards Atlantic City on a road the locals call the Black or White Horse Pikes, Routes 40 and 30, in the distance to your left, you’ll notice something a bit strange for a coastal area. It’s a Wind Farm. The first to be built in New Jersey let alone Atlantic City and the first Coastal Wind Farm in the United States. You might think this a bit strange with the Casinos in the background and a bit out of place. But I can’t think of a better means of producing electricity for such a booming area.
This farm produces 19 million kilowatt-hours, which is emission free. There are five terbines in all standing 397 feet tall, so there hard to miss. It serves as elelctricity for about 2000 homes in the area, and is also used by the (ACUA) Atlantic County Utilities Authority. Now if your wondering what emission free energy means I’ll explain. Most electric energy that is produced, runs on fossil fuel. These fuels release particles in the air such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, mercury, just to name a few.
Now there is going to be argument against this type of energy as there is with everything new that develops, such as will it harm the local birds? That’s any argument for my readers. Would you choose to have less pollutants in your air or maybe the chance of one of the birds not looking where there going?
