“Gone with the Wind” was just named America’s favorite film.
On Tuesday night, Tom Bergeron and Cynthia McFadden hosted the two-hour ABC News and People special, “Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time,” counting down the top five films in 10 categories.
“Airplane!” was named Best Comedy. “Star Wars” won for Best Sci-Fi Film. “The Sound of Music” won for Best Musical. “Gone with the Wind” won for Best Screen Kiss. “Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn” won for Best Line. “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” won for Best Action Film. “Silence of the Lambs” was named Best Suspense/Thriller Film. “The Lion King” was named Best Animated Film. Forrest Gump was named the Best Film Character.
And, ultimately, “Gone with the Wind” was named Best Film.
The results in the remaining five categories (Best Horror Film, Best Chick Flick, Most Romantic Screen Couple, Best Western Film and Best Political/Historic Film ) were posted at www.abcnews.com/bestinfilm and www.people.com.
According to ABC, online voters selected the winners from a list of nominees created by a panel of film industry experts, including actors Kevin Spacey, Susan Sarandon, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, and Cameron Diaz; directors Ivan Reitman, Mel Brooks, Garry Marshall, Michael Moore and Nora Ephron; producers Jerry Weintraub and Harvey Weinstein; writer Neil Simon, and critics/writers Peter Travers, Janet Maslin, James Lipton, Ben Mankiewicz and People magazine’s Alynda Wheat and Larry Hackett.
Online voting was open from late November 2010 to early January 2011. More than 500,000 votes were reportedly cast.
The two-hour program included fresh interviews with some of the stars and directors of the winning films, including Harrison Ford, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Newton-John.
