The Oliver House is a historic building, and one of the most known haunted buildings in the area. If you are familiar with Toledo it is located downtown on Broadway Street, close to the High Level Bridge. In 1859 the Oliver House first opened its doors as a 171 room hotel. It was one of the most luxurious hotels of its time. In 1894 competition with hotels downtown became quite competitive and the Oliver House was turned into a basic rooming house. From 1919 until 1967 the Oliver House was used for manufacturing purposes. It was used for a light fixture company and in 1947 it was used for an axel manufacturer. Finally in 1967 the building was used for storage purposes and had a few small businesses come and go.
Today the Oliver House house is home to the Maumee Bay Brewing Company. It is also where Rockwell’s Steakhouse, Maumee Bay Brew Pub, The Cafe, and Petit Fours Patisserie is located. It also holds room for private parties, banquets, etc.
Why would this place be haunted you might think, but there is more history behind this building than most know. In 1859 as the hotel was opening the Spanish-American War was going on. Wounded soldiers were taken to the hotels second floor to be treated. As with any battle, soldiers died inside the Oliver House. In the Basement, it has been said to have been used as a temporary morgue for the the soldiers bodies. With the soldiers dying from the tragedy of war, it is possible some of these spirits may still be left behind.
In 1965 the Oliver House was under renovation and the bones of an Indian, believed to be a warrior chief were discovered. When the construction crew discovered them, they simply buried the bones again, and built the new addition over it. With the possibility of the Oliver House being built over an Indian burial ground, its also said these spirits might behind the haunting as well.
One of the most common apparitions seen in the building is known as the “Captain”. He is seen in full uniform and seen in the pool room. Everything from seeing apparitions appear, extreme cold spots, and feelings of being touched, when nobody is around, are what many people experience. It is no wonder why the Oliver House is towards the top of the list of the most haunted places in Toledo Ohio.
