Hawaii Five-0 is a television police drama set in the fiftieth state of the union. Hawaii Five-0 2010 Season 1, Episode 16 is titled “E Malama”. Watch the full Episode 16, E Malama on CBS. The Hawaiian phrase “e mālama” can be translated as “protect and serve!” Mālama means “to take care of; to tend, protect, or support”. (Note that without the macron over the ā, malama means month, moon, or “perhaps”.) The “e” indicates the imperative mood or something that is absolutely necessary, such as when one yells “stop!” at someone who is about to step into oncoming traffic.
In Episode 16 the Hawaii Five-0 team is tasked to find, secure, and protect a witness who is needed to testify in a trial. In this episode, everyone on the team protects someone.
McGarrett and Chin Ho track the witness, Julie Masters and hired killers through the jungle. Julie has done a good job of protecting herself until McGarrett and Chin find her. Chin escorts her back through the jungle while McGarrett continues to hunt the killers. He disables one in order to get information, yet tends to the assassin’s life-threatening wound.
Chin protects the witness on the way back to Honolulu, saving her before she falls off a cliff and again by killing the second assassin. McGarrett returns to protect Chin and the witness by killing the third assassin and all three finally make it back to the courthouse for the trial.
Kono protects the witness at the courthouse from the fourth and final assassin, the “cleaner” sent to complete what the team of three killers failed to do.
While the Hawaii Five-0 team is tending to the witness, Danny works to protect his ex-wife Rachel and daughter Grace from an unknown enemy. Carjacked at gunpoint, Danny tends to his family while the team proceeds with the assignment. Still, McGarrett offers concurrent support to Danny.
Danny tells Rachel she did a good job protecting Grace during the carjacking, but warns her that the incident is a warning because the car was returned intact instead of shipped to China for a quick $20K. Rachel’s home is subsequently ransacked and Danny suspects Rachel’s husband Stan is to blame for these attacks. Ultimately, Danny uncovers an extortion plot; Stan is being blackmailed by housing commissioner Bruce Hoffman. Danny goes to see Hoffman and lets him know that he has the tapes Stan made of the housing permit meetings. The tapes implicate Bruce in price gouging and Danny assures him he will stop at nothing—he will kill Bruce—to protect his daughter Grace.
