WARNING: On February 23rd, Chicago’s Claudia Cassidy Theatre will be Ground Zero for the second coming of aliens who invaded Earth once before!
It will be the site for an exact recreation of the live radio broadcast that freaked America out of it’s collective mind on October 30, 1938–The Mercury Theatre of the Air’s production of “War of the Worlds”, updated and dramatized by Howard Koch and directed by Orson Welles (who also narrated and starred)!
This is the radio play that Time Magazine labeled “a textbook example of mass hysteria”. Listeners who were tuned into the program from its beginning knew it was simply a compelling drama adapted from the 1898 HG Wells story However, many of those who came in late believed the news bulletins, interviews with scientists, and announcements from government offices were real—and that they were facing certain extinction by creatures from Mars!
The AFTRA/SAG Senior Radio Players, experts at the almost-lost craft of audio-only drama, will re-create the script complete with the same low-tech sound effects that worked so well to convince the audience that super-scientific aliens were rampaging thru the USA!
And best of all: it’s FREE!
The fun begins this Wednesday at 7:00pm at the Claudia Cassidy Theatre, 77 E Randolph Street. Seating is limited, so arrive early.
