The Heartland Farm Direct Market is one of Lowertown’s newest markets. This foodie’s dream is located on Broadway Street and 5th Street, just across from the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market.
Opening in the summer of 2010, an off-shoot of the immensely popular Heartland Restaurant, the market offers a variety of meats, fish, cheeses, and produce; in addition to Heartland’s house-made jams, jellies, preserves, soups and stocks; as well as eggs, dairy products, coffee and tea. A deli, bakery and coffee bar with tables for eating in round out the market.
This is not your average neighborhood market. Hard to find On a recent visit, the meat case was filled with amazing looking trout, chicken, duck, bison and boar. Several varieties of beets and winter root vegetables took prominece in the produce section. Boar chops and golden beets made a very tasty and elegant meal that evening.
Prices are high on their specialty meats and vegetables. This shouldn’t be a surprise, as these are the same locally grown, small farm produced meats and produce featured on Heartland Restaurant’s menu. House made stocks, soups and other items were priced competitively.
