Rachel Marcial-Donaire is not your damsel in distress. Matter of fact, she can kick a lot of guy’s butts. Perhaps that is why boxing sensation Nonito Donaire Jr. loves her so much. She isn’t just easy on the eyes, she also knows how to fight for and stand behind her man at the same time. They say behind every man’s success is a woman. Vis-à-vis Nonito ‘The Filipino Flash’ Donaire Jr. is his beautiful and supportive wife Rachel.
I caught with ‘The Knockout Queen’ this week to talk about issues concerning her and her husband Nonito Donaire Jr., who is scheduled for the biggest fight of his career on February 19 against Fernando Montiel.

Interview highlights transcript:
What can you say about Nonito’s fight against Montiel?
Rachel – I think that everyone should be watching it. It’s on HBO After Dark so it’s free. It’s even on Pay-Per-View, and the ringside tickets are so cheap for this fight. I think this starts a whole new era of Philippines vs. Mexico, so it’ll be fun.
How hectic is the lifestyle of a top pro boxer’s wife?
Rachel – After the Sidorenko fight, we went to Vegas for a week with his godfather, and then we went to the Philippines for five days. That was insane because we don’t get to sleep whenever we’re in the Philippines. And then we spent a week in Japan-we spent Christmas in Japan-and then we were back in the states before New Year’s Eve, A couple of days ago he actually told me that he is still jet-lagged. His body still hasn’t adjusted. He always wants to take a nap […] Hopefully his body will finish adjusting, He’s already deep into training. He’s already sparring.

Is that a concern? Are you afraid that he might be drained, over-trained because of all the travelling and the proximity of his last fight from this next one?
Rachel – No, I think it’s good because his weight didn’t actually go up. If we stayed two to three weeks in the Philippines, he would be eating cups and cups and cups of rice, and he would be back up to 140 easily. I believe he is only walking around 127-128 right now, so weight is not going to be an issue. All he got to do is train and work on the strategy for the fight?
What really is your role in Nonito’s career?
(Click here for photos of Donaire training at Team Oyama Training Center)
Rachel – I’m his personal manager. It’s actually funny because I get comments that ‘Rachel should handle Nonito’s career,’ and the funny thing is I don’t. Cameron Dunkin does. He’s the one that does the purses, the opponents and everything like that. All I do is check the e-mails, send the jackets from the websites, help him with his Social Media, things like that. And besides that, then I got to do my chores like the laundry, the driving and whatever else he asks me do. But besides that it’s really about helping him with what he needs to get done.
Are you worried about your husband getting hurt against Montiel?
Rachel – I’m not really scared for this fight. I watched the tapes over and over again. I watched it with Nonito too, and he sees what he can capitalize on. As long as he focuses on the gameplan, he’ll be fine. He’s (Montiel) not as complicated as a fighter as I thought he would be. He does pack a powerful punch, but as long as you know which punch that is, he’s not going to really hit Nonito, so it wouldn’t matter.
Nonito’s fight is a week after Valentines Day, how does that affect your celebration, and how do you handle all the rumors, controversy and the negativity? (Click here to watch the full interview)
