Frankly, if I hear one more Republican advocate for some extreme right-wing position under the verbal banner of, “this is the will of the American people, they spoke loud and clear this past November,” I’m going to start sending each one copies of the dictionary definition of hyperbole and a reminder that the good Lord they like to invoke so often, doesn’t take kindly to liars.
Their latest righteous cause is to try and impose further limitations on the reproductive rights of women. Darn all those “activist” judges who have upheld Roe vs. Wade and insisted that abortion is a Constitutional right! When are they going to learn that they are doing their job correctly when they issue decisions that satisfy the religious an political agenda of conservatives? Shame on judges who advance and protect the civil liberties of Americans.!
Following the Republican House’s symbolic-waste of time bill that sought to repeal health care reform, Republicans have introduced an anti-Abortion bill in another meaningless, divisive attempt to say thank you to their extremist conservative base and those who believe it is their moral obligation to legislate their religious beliefs into law.
According to the ACLU, H.R. 3, introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), includes a host of draconian provisions that would seriously damage every woman’s ability to access reproductive health care:
- The bill would make permanent the ban on abortion coverage for women who rely on the government for health care, including Native Americans, federal employees, women in the military, Peace Corps volunteers, poor women and women in federal prisons.
- The bill would effectively eliminate coverage for abortion in the private market by making it more onerous for insurance companies to offer coverage for abortion and by imposing new taxes on businesses and individuals who purchase private health insurance plans that include abortion coverage.
- The bill would penalize businesses that offer their employees comprehensive insurance plans that cover abortion, taking aim at the majority of insurance plans that currently include abortion coverage.
- Perhaps most disturbing, the bill would excuse public hospitals from their obligations under federal law to provide medically necessary abortions to pregnant women facing life-threatening emergencies.
Isn’t it ironic that the party and politicians who always wrap themselves in the flag, who reliably tell the public that progressives defy our Constitution, are the ones who inevitably work hard to limit Constitutional liberties?
