Are you ready for Fallon’s story? In Too Deep delves into the heart of the Arcane Society and really find out what makes it tick because Fallon Jones is the one who holds all the seemingly random connections in his head just ready to pull everything together to find out how they affect the world.
While we’ve seen Fallon in other Arcane Society stories this time he’s taken on an assistant, Isabella Valdez, the woman who works at the cafe across the street. It’s not long before she has Fallon’s business straightened out and begins working on his personal life. We know from previous stories that Fallon is a strategy talent which is how he determines patterns from chaos even though his friends and enemies think he’s just working out conspiracy theories.
Isabella is a finder talent, with some other stuff thrown in for good measure, and the great thing here is that she was raised by real conspiracy theory ‘kooks’. In fact, this is the first time in her life that she’s living under her real name having lived off the grid and without paperwork her entire life.
Isabella’s talent leads them to a cache of paranormal weapons. They work to figure out how they got to Scargill Cove and how to keep them safe from others. They learn about the early history of the area and what brought the townsfolk there and we also learn more about the politics of the Arcane Society.
I’ll tell you – the strongest part of this story is the relationship between Fallon and Isabella. The plot, as much as I really wanted to try to get into it and figure out how it was going to work itself out, just didn’t make enough sense to me. This is Book One of The Looking Glass Triology and with other Arcane Society books it will move through her next Amanda Quick book [historical] and then her next Jayne Castle book [futuristic]. Maybe if it went chronologically I would’ve been more invested but I don’t think so. It just didn’t capture my attention, but as we all know I adore books with continuity characters and for that alone I picked it up and I’ll pick up the next one, too. Check it out!
