By now the whole country is aware of the senseless tragedy which occured yesterday in Tucson, Arizona wherein a deranged individual shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) in the head and killed six people, including a federal judge and a nine year old girl who had been elected to student council at her school and was visiting to learn more about how government works. Regardless of anyone’s political perspective, people from across the spectrum agree that this kind of behavior is an affront to our system of government. It should also be pointed out, however, that as more is learned about the gunman, the more it becomes clear that he was likely a classic paranoid schizophrenic.
That unfortunate reality, however, doesn’t seem to stop the Left from blaming Republicans and conservatives for the tragedy, despite the fact that one of the shooter’s favorite books was The Manifesto of the Communist Party. Instead of uniting with their colleagues in a shared sense of grief at the possibility of the loss of a fellow member of the political community, Democrats and liberals are consuming themselves with using this putrid event as a means to try and achieve their political goals, including increased gun control, which Democratic Members of Congress have been harping on all weekend. Congresswoman Giffords has been a staunch supporter of Second Amendment rights.
That isn’t all, because now our freedom of speech ought to be limited as well, say some public officials. Already, the typical Leftist drivelers-you know, those people who have lost the argument and lost the last General Election-are all over local news websites such as the Knoxville News Sentinel blaming everyone EXCEPT the perpetrator. This writer has busied himself for much of the weekend reading the various papers and blogs and their online comment sections. In doing so, I have learned that Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin, Mark Levine, and FOX News are among those to blame for this tragedy. All of these people and entities put it into the mind of the perpetrator to go shoot up a constituent meet-up at a grocery store. This writer is a life-long conservative, and listens to Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, and FOX News, is a gun owner, I have never in my life voted for a Democrat and I have not ever had the faintest desire to go shoot a Democratic Member of Congress at a constituent meeting.
Yet we are already hearing cries from the Left about “hate speech” being the cause of this horrible act, and much like they did after the tragedy in Oklahoma City, the Left actively advocated censoring speech that they called “hate speech.” Almost uniformly, the speech the Left deemed hateful was right-of-center or right wing, critical of liberal or Leftist politics or policy, and pro-Second Amendment. There were not any corresponding cries from the Right during that time to censor Leftist commentators in law for “hate speech,” but the NAACP has actively pushed for “hate speech” laws for years.
Back then we at least had a Congress who would never have allowed it and a President in Bill Clinton who at least respected his opposition enough not to even try such a thing so blatant. I fear that is not the case with Mr. Obama, who has already shown in the history of his political career (read about his first State Senate campaign or watch the Frontline documentary about him which discusses it, and how he falsely maligned his AFRICAN-AMERICAN primary opponent) that he will do whatever it takes to DESTROY his opposition, which is why that opposition can have no letup when dealing with him.
What happened Saturday is a slap in the face to our republic and to the sense of justice of all decent people. The person responsible for it-the one who should pay the price for the crime-is the person who did the terrible deed.
This should neither be used to advance a political agenda, nor profit politically, nor trample on the constitutional rights of Right or Left.
