Is the tea party becoming co-opted? Is it being led astray by outside interests? This is a question which is being asked lately, especially after Gena Bell, a tea party leader in the Cincinnati area has gone to work in the Government. It seems the tea party detractors are using this as evidence that members are not committed to the cause and are only using this as a means for personal gain.
We disagree. There is nothing wrong with a person who believes in what they are doing, leaving the movement in order to a.) better themselves and b.) trying to make positive change by working in the actual area they are trying to change. Is this not why any politician runs for office, whether the lowest level local office or the highest office in the land? Any candidate will say they are running for office because they feel they can make a difference, at least this is how it used to be, and still is for some.
There is a problem in this country today where our elected officials feel they are entitled to their offices. Once they are elected they feel they are there for life and make it a professional career. This is certainly not what the Founding Fathers intended.
Benjamin Franklin stated it thusly:
“There are two passions which have a powerful influence in the affairs of men. These are ambitions and avarice; the love of power and the love of money. Separately, each of these has great force in prompting men to action; but when united in view of the same object, they have in many minds the most violent effects. Place before the eyes of such men a post of honor, that shall at the same time be a place of profit, and they will move heaven and earth to obtain it.”
We have made our posts of honor also places of profit as seen in the amount of PAC money available to candidates and the corporate contributions so these candidates when elected will vote in favor of the PAC and special interests on legislation concerning the same.
Franklin also said:
“There is scare a king in a hundred who would not, if he could, follow the example of Pharaoh – get first all the people’s money, then all their lands, and then make them and their children servants forever.”
This is the danger when you allow your elected officials to become career politicians.
So is it wrong for Gena Bell to take a job with a person she helped get elected to office? No. This is how she can continue to make a difference and continue to spread the tea party principles for some time to come. While there are those who are using the name of the tea party for personal gain or trying to push their own agendas, the true tea party believers see through these and do not let themselves be swayed from their beliefs. The left will never admit they are in trouble and will continue to throw mud and spread lies whenever they can, but the tea party will continue to bring change
