In a stunning development, Bob Arum and Top Rank Promotions have just reached an agreement with Showtime and CBS to handle the upcoming PPV fight between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley. According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Arum reached a deal with Showtime on Friday afternoon. Rafael also reports that part of the deal involves CBS airing commercials for the fight during primetime TV.
This is huge for Pacquiao vs. Mosley. CBS reaches a larger audience than HBO and Showtime combined. One of the largest broadcast stations on TV, CBS will easily increase the exposure for all parties involved. ESPN is also reporting that CBS and/or Showtime will also run a series of shows leading up to the fight in similar fashion to HBO’s “24/7” series.
I’m pleased to hear this news. HBO has had a monopoly with major PPV fights and fighters. Just look back to last year had they forces Sergio Martinez into another fight with Paul Williams instead of setting up different fights for each fighter. HBO has become more of a dictator than a developer. With the biggest name in the sport, Manny Pacquiao, heading to Showtime/CBS, this could be historical shift in Boxing promotional power between Showtime and HBO. Additionally, CBS would be a significant boost to the exposure of different fighters especially American fighters.
