Don’t call it Japanese. Don’t call it Fusion. Call it the most amazing taste sensation you’ll find on South Pearl Street.
The creators of the wildly successful Sushi Den had the inspiration to create a place where one can go to unwind after a hectic day and imbibe in a small bite and a relaxing beverage with friends. Izakaya pubs can be found all over Japan, and are places where people can go to let loose after a hard day’s work.
The chefs at Izakaya Den create unexpected flavors from a multitude of combinations: Mexican, French, Japanese, Italian… These inspired combinations come together to thrill not only your taste buds, but your eyes as well. The food, the drinks and the decor are all beautiful works of art.
Izakaya Den boasts three menus: Global Cuisine, Japanese Cuisine, and Sushi, and all the food is served “tapas” style: Small plates to share. You’ll want to try it all, but if your wallet doesn’t allow for such an indulgence, here are some must-haves from each of the three menus:
Grilled Panzanella Salad: The perfect plate of jumbo lump crab, fresh toasted focaccia bread, Colorado goat cheese, and toasted pistachios, all tossed together with a light drizzle of plum wine vinaigrette. Though it may sound heavy, the focaccia is light and not too dense, the crab is slightly sweet, and the vinaigrette brings a perfect acidity to balance out the flavors and textures.
Izakaya Den Short Ribs: Still sizzling, tossed with mushrooms, jalapenos, haricot verts, and a Korean Marinade, these short ribs are the epitome of what is referred to in Asian cooking as “umami”. A perfectly balanced, round, complete flavor. If you can’t imagine what this could possibly mean, try these short ribs and the umami lightbulb will burn brightly above your head.
Everything on Izakaya Den’s sushi menu is a must have. The fish here (and at Sushi Den) is flown in daily from Japan, care of the owner’s brother who resides there. Short of flying to Japan (if you can deal with your hunger on such a long trip), the fish can’t get much fresher.
Between the food and drinks, the dark wood accents and the perfectly colored lanterns, all your senses will be thrilled beyond imagination here, and you’ll be planning your next visit before you have time to order your next dish.
