I was reading an article today in the AJC online and I was amazed at the length Jay Bookman went to in twisting Herman Cain`s words into an attack on Muslims. I will say the story was indeed a non-story and would bring any intelligent reader to a roaring yawn; that being said, it was a real cheap shot by Bookman and I wanted to set the record straight.
The article headline says, “Herman Cain drops ‘friendly’ warning to American Muslims,” which leads the reader to believe that as a Presidential candidate Cain was making a policy statement towards the Muslim community. The article and the line of questioning surround an incident Herman Cain had when he underwent cancer surgery and found his doctor to be of Middle Eastern decent. Cain is at first nervous about this doctor but is then told by a personal associate that the doctor is a Christian.
The context of the story reveals that it may have just been a joke. If it wasn`t, can someone tell me why the heck anyone shouldn`t be suspicious of Middle Eastern men and Muslims in particular? Then we see the typical liberal templates that all criticism of a person of color is racism or bigotry, Yaaawwwn.
Bookman is getting his information from a former interview Cain did with Christianity Today. In the interview Herman Cain was asked what he thinks the role of Muslims in America is or should be. Cain gives this answer in his interview:
“The role of Muslims in American society is for them to be allowed to practice their religion freely, which is part of our First Amendment. The role of Muslims in America is not to convert the rest of us to the Muslim religion. That I resent. Because we are a Judeo-Christian nation, from the fact that 85 percent of us are self-described Christians, or evangelicals, or practicing the Jewish faith. Eighty-five percent. One percent of the practicing religious believers in this country are Muslim.
And so I push back and reject them trying to convert the rest of us. And based upon the little knowledge that I have of the Muslim religion, you know, they have an objective to convert all infidels or kill them. Now, I know that there are some peaceful Muslims who don’t go around preaching or practicing that. Well, unfortunately, we can’t sit back and tolerate the radical ones simply because we know that there are some of them who don’t believe in that aspect of the Muslim religion. So their role is to be allowed to practice their religion freely, just like we should be allowed to practice our religion freely, and not try to convert the rest of us.”(AJC, 2011)
Bookman goes on to accuse Herman Cain of denying Muslims the right to proselytize their faith in American society. Anyone who listens to Herman Cain knows how intelligent, fair, and gentle the man is. He is very tolerant to opposing views on his radio program and will talk through and issue with anyone. Herman Cain is a man who speaks politically incorrect truth, however, and he is admired by many for that fact. Herman Cain has on many occasions spoke to the issue of Sharia Law and the Muslim community’s vocal and clear goal of converting all societies to this Muslim Law. This interview was in that context, I believe, and not as Bookman tried to paint it. Jay Bookman is just another typical liberal at the AJC who took a cheap, and I mean cheap, shot at Herman Cain.
What is the matter Bookman? Are you mad that another black man is smart enough to think for himself and leave the white liberal plantation? Herman Cain is a great man and deserves respect for his many accomplishments, accomplishments I might add that far outweigh Obama`s.
