FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – All eyes will be on the Sunshine State when two of the top heavyweights in the world will battle for the ISKA heavyweight title at Fight Time 4 on April 1, 2011 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, as Jeff “The Snowman” Monson (fighting out of Coconut Creek, FL / 40-11) takes on Tony “Kryptonite” Lopez (fighting out of Huntington Beach, CA / 23-5). The bout will be for the independently sanctioned title, which will be the first handed out by ISKA.
ML Management client Jeff Monson, a two-time ADCC open weight champion and former no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion, is looking to pick up his seventh consecutive win and first career mixed martial arts world championship. A former UFC heavyweight title challenger, Monson has racked up a 17-5 record since 2007 (40-11 overall), including victories in Pride, Sengoku, and Dream. A veteran of almost every major promotion in the world, Monson has remained as one of the sport’s top heavyweight fighters. Now, Monson will compete in Fight Time Promotions for the first time with his eyes on heavyweight gold.
“I’m excited about this upcoming title fight,” said Monson. “Tony is a difficult open and will be tough to beat but I’ve been keeping my training up in preparation for him.”
Planning on dropping to the 205-pound light heavyweight division after his already scheduled heavyweight fights, this could be the last chance at heavyweight gold for the 14-year veteran Monson. A Pac-10 champion while wrestling at Oregon State University, Monson is no stranger to cutting weight and he hopes to make one last run at a major organization by dropping to light heavyweight.
“My management team and I have been exploring options for my career and dropping to light heavyweight is top of the list,” indicated Monson. “I’ve cut to this weight before and feel comfortable there, so I know I can dominate in the light heavyweight category.”
Tony Lopez, a former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion in King of the Cage, made waves in the mixed martial arts community with a 16-fight winning streak that ran from 2007 to 2010. A veteran of King of the Cage, WEC, ShoXC, M-1 Challenge, and Bellator, Lopez is one of the toughest fighters in the sport. Riding a four-fight winning streak himself, “Kryptonite” is looking to pick up his fifth consecutive stoppage victory when he takes on Monson.
Fight Time Promotions is run by 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist Howard Davis Jr.; the organization is bringing the first-ever world title fight to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and the historic War Memorial Auditorium. In order to make this highly anticipated bout to as many fans as possible, it will be available on Fox Sports Net and SunSports FightZone series in Florida; it will also be shown as an Internet Pay-Per-View via www.GoFightLive.comand will be streamed live around the world.
