Jon Bon Jovi and yoga create harmony for the Bon Jovi frontman who says hitting down dog is his secret to staying fit (ahem, his 30-inch waist) and not having to turn to plastic surgery. In addition to finding his inner yoga love, Bon Jovi also balances yin with yang by using the hard-hitting game of football as a way to release stress and – believe it or not – make the world a better place.
JON BON JOVI AND YOGA: “I’M A 21ST CENTURY MAN”
Cutting through the tough, heavy-metal exterior, the 48-year-old “Blaze of Glory” rocker admits turning to yoga in his later years to keep in shape. Slashing typical gym workouts from his regimen after years of pounding the weights, Jon Bon Jovi finds yoga to be his new workout go-to.
“I was doing Workout 101 for years: treadmill, elliptical, weights,” Jon Bon Jovi, a New Jersey native, said of his transition from heavy gyms to the yoga studio. “Now I’m going to do yoga. I went for my first time, and I enjoyed it. I’m a 21st-century man.”
JON BON JOVI YOGA CHANT
Three years later, Jon Bon Jovi is still rocking out on the yoga mat and he’s influencing other yogis to take a lighter ‘tude to the typical yoga tune-up. Yogi guru and celebrity yoga teacher Sadie Nardini dedicated a yoga chant to Jon Bon Jovi, titling it the “Bon Jovi Chant”.
NY TIMES: “LIVING ON A PRAYER’ PERFECT YOGA MANTRA
The “Bon Jovi Chant” (seen at left) has since been featured in the New York Times and yogi forums worldwide. Nardini, who teaches yoga at East West Yoga in Manhattan aligned the yoga chant with Jon Bon Jovi’s hit “Living on a Prayer, the Times agreeing “it’s hard to feel self-important when the mantra is ‘Whooooa! We’re halfway there! Whooooa! Livin’ on a prayer!'”
CHARITABLE EFFORTS THROUGH SPORT
As is all with balance, Jon Bon Jovi’s influence on yoga has been equally felt in his just-as-enthusiastic energy about football. As former owner of the arena football team Philadephia Soul, Jon Bon Jovi formed the Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation in order to help “combat issues that force families and individuals into economic despair.”
SPOTTED TRACKING NFL PLAYOFFS
When the arena league disbanded, Jon Bon Jovi continued his efforts. Renaming the charity the Jon Bovi Soul Foundation, Jon Bon Jovi continues his charitable efforts both on and off the field. Recently spotted at the NFL’s AFC Championship game, Jon Bon Jovi was spotted chatting up on the sidelines with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and and Patriots coach Bill Belichick (photos at left).
JON BON JOVI: I HAVEN’T HAD PLASTIC SURGERY
With the recent news Jon Bon Jovi will be taking a break later this year, it’s clear to fans he won’t be bored – or retiring.
In an interview with ContactMusic.com, he said: “For an old man who has no plastic surgery, still has all his own hair and wears a 30-inch waist, I’m doing okay.”
