Because Dr. Juan Carlos Arauz, Ed.D is very in touch with his origins, he always introduces himself as the son of Dr. Arauz and Elizabeth Arauz. This thoughtully forceful and goal-oriented man is a consultant, trainer, and writer with a specialty in immigration, youth, and education as well as being the founding executive director of E3. He has forged his own youthful experience and turmoil into the tool he so astutely uses to make the world a better place for the immigrant children who have come to him for help. E3 narrows the academic achievement gap for students and sets them on the way to a successful adulthood.
Where to begin smoothing the upheaval of children who have come to this country through no choice of their own? The sorrow of having to leave a beautiful homeland to live as a fish out of water in a foreign American culture can be enormous. People who are hopeful when they get here and too often lost soon after they land in what they see as safety and promise face a difficult road. Do people come here with an eye to going back home to the motherland when things are better? “Yes”, says Juan Carlos. His own father wants to be buried in Guatamala; when it is time, he will go back. Cubanos plan to return when Castro reign is over.
There is a dream that people have about going back to their motherland, the home of their parents and grandparents. A large piece of the immigrant experience is the plan to be here for a temporary time and then go home. But temporary turns into forever, and we need a smart alternative to being permanently neither here nor there. Juan Carlos’s abilities come into play right here. These children cannot change their situation but Juan Carlos can help change their attitude towards their situation and plan for victory in America.
When asked if people shouldn’t change policy in the countries of difficulty they have to flee or if we should concentrate on changing some policies here, Juan Carlos says he focuses on education since he will not be in Congress to make sweeping governmental changes. When I hear his list of essential 21st century skills, adapting language and thought, critical analysis, teamwork and cross-cultural communication, innovation, I laugh out loud since it seems to me that with these skills backing his enormous intelligence, charisma and devotion to the task he is exactly who should be in congress. Personally, Congress or not, I breathe easier just seeing that he is such a significant force in this world.
Juan Carlos, passionate about the well-being of children, is the father of eight; two biological and six adopted. I cannot think of a better way to repair the world and build a family at the same time. I invite you to listen to Juan Carlos talk about who he is, his goals in a world where too many children are ignored and what he does about it. The very sound of his voice seems to carry assurance that he can make things better. When I listen to him talk about what his wife has been to him through his own years of anger and personal chaos I see a woman of towering love and strength in whose presence no one could go wrong. It is no surprise that he plans to write his love letter to her.
From me to you with love in the air,
