Seasoned bar vets or amateur drinkers alike will find something familiar, even comfortable about Goofy’s Sports Bar in Ballard. It offers a mixed décor, combining elements like: an open (gas) fire pit from rustic ski lodge; rough-hewn ceiling beams from an old village pub; and stained wood paneling from an 80’s basement bar adorned with trophies, vendor swag, and local sports memorabilia. Also, with no less than a ½ dozen big screens there aren’t too many bad seats to view your favorite game or read lyrics to the song you’re singing.
There didn’t seem to be any assigned wait staff, so food and drink orders largely needed to be placed at the bar. Bartenders Kris and Trayza (sp?) were efficient enough with loads of FUN energy, mixing decent drinks at standard prices. They’ll also make time to take a turn on the mic if requested – or if they lose a bet! The menu is passable, college cafeteria-quality fare; not the best value in the food quality/quantity/price equation, but edible and fills a hole (not to worry, pizza is next door and Dicks Drive In just down the street for late night snacking).
Karaoke nights will find a crowd of predominantly 20-somethings with smatterings of older patrons, some who undoubtedly share “patronage” with a popular strip club next door. As such, one should expect some loud, at times irreverent behavior and language from excitable younger brood, as well as bachelor and bachelorette parties – and this can directly translate to songs requested and sung. That said, on any given night it’s likely that you’ll hear a varied sampling of the music spectrum, and an extensive digital song library accommodates this. One such evening featured the song stylings of Snoop Dog’s Gin and Juice, George Strait’s The Fireman, Thin Lizzy’s Boys Are Back In Town, a compilation of 4 songs by Queen, AND The Itsy Bitsy Spider (yes, the children’s tune) all in one rotation. Hosts DJ Fehronamo and the Goddess Carla run the karaoke shows on Wednesday and Thursday respectively, each adding their personal flair and experience. They do a good job keeping things lively and running smoothly, making sure their singers sound great and get up to sing as much as possible.
Though not for everyone, Goofy’s Sports Bar is a regular stop in Ballard’s karaoke culture and an interesting place to get your drink and song on!
