March Madness can mean only one thing. The golf season is right around the corner. For many of us it’s time to think about getting new clubs or getting the old ones re-gripped, re-shafted, or the loft and lie adjusted. For me, there is only one place in Greensboro to go – Kelly’s Custom Golf on Lawndale. Kelly has been repairing and custom building clubs for Triad-area golfers since 1982. His first shop was on Battleground just south of the railroad tracks on Green Valley Road. Four years ago he moved into larger quarters on Lawndale across the street from the Target Shopping Center.
I met Kelly in 1991 when I became the first head pro at Bur-Mil Park Golf Course. I was looking for the highest quality golf shop that I could send my students to when they asked about club repair and custom clubs. I always believed that custom-built clubs were the better option for golfers. Professionals don’t trust their games to off-the-rack clubs. They know the value of clubs that perfectly fit their specifications and swing. Why should weekend warriors accept anything less? It’s only recently that Major Manufacturers have begun offering custom-fit clubs. Unfortunately if their shafts don’t match your swing you’re still out of luck.
I was completely impressed with the time that Kelly took with customers when explaining why custom-built clubs were a better option than off-the-rack name brands and how they could improve their game and cost them less. I was equally impressed with the complete assessment process he used to custom-fit each golfer. My students always expressed their gratitude to me for sending them to Kelly. They thought that the clubs they purchased from Kelly’s complemented the lessons they took from me and helped them to get the most of their games. The same was true for golfers who just needed repairs or annual club tune-ups.
Today I no longer am involved in the teaching business, but continue to have my own clubs tuned up regularly with new grips and loft and lie adjustments at Kelly’s whenever needed. It is also the only shop I would go to purchase new custom-built clubs.
Kelly’s services include re-gripping, re-shafting, loft/lie adjustments, re-grooving, club detailing, refinishing, spinning, club extensions, as well as complete professional club fitting and building for golfers in the market for new clubs which includes shaft frequency analysis and Launch monitor assessments. You can find out more about Kelly’s Custom Golf on the web at www.kellysgolf.com.
