Kim Kardashian, who has morphed into a beauty and fitness icon since becoming famous in 2007, loves makeup and clothes and says being a sex symbol is empowering.
“It’s definitely powerful [to be considered a sex symbol],” Kardashian says in the February 2011 issue of Glamour.
“I don’t find myself as sexy as everyone thinks. I’m a lot more insecure than people would assume, but with little stupid things. When I get dressed, I’m always so indecisive.”
‘BODY SELF-ACCEPTANCE TAKES TIME’
Kim, 30, who recently launched her own exercise video, fragrance, skincare products and clothing line thanks to the public’s fascination with her voluptuous curves, says it took her years to embrace her full figure and exotic looks.
“It’s a process [becoming comfortable with your body],” says the 5’2″ Kardashian, whose weight has fluctuated between 109 and 128 pounds.
“You have to learn to accept it. You have to learn to like what you see in the mirror. There are definitely times when I don’t feel like myself, but you have to fake it until you make it.”
TEASED FOR HER ‘BIG, UGLY BREASTS’ AS A KID
Growing up, Kim was teased by her old sister, Kourtney, who called her breasts “big and ugly.”
Kim recounts: “Kourtney probably bullied me the most because she hadn’t developed. She was always making fun of me. When I was 11 I was a C-cup and I got my period. I was just insecure.
Kardashian, who was recently voted the Best Butt in the World, says being curvy as a kid was embarrassing. She recounts:
“I remember I would sit in the bathtub, and I would put a hot washcloth on my boobs and think, Please, Lord, just please, I don’t want to grow any bigger. I would cry.
My mom would say, ‘You are going to love this one day.’ And she was like, ‘You’re Armenian. Look at all your aunts. They’re super curvy, and this is your family. This is who you are.’ We were raised around all of our Armenian cousins, and I know a lot about the culture. So I think that made me confident in who I am.
Kim says she got her work ethic from her attorney dad, the late Robert Kardashian.
“Being little and watching my dad get up, put on his suit every single day, go to work—seeing how hard he worked [made an impression on me],” she says. “He let us know that when we turned 18, we were going to be cut off [financially], and we had to sign a contract for everything.
“When I was 16 and it was car time, it was negotiated that I had to pay for my gas, and if I crashed the car, I was liable. Everything was a contract with my dad. And I still have them—I saved them all. Well, when I was 16, I bumped someone and I had to pay for it. So I got a job working at a clothing store, and ever since then I’ve loved to work.”
‘I LOVE MAKEUP AND CLOTHES’
Kim, a self-professed makeup junkie who loves experimenting with different looks and hairstyles, jokes that if she had been born a boy, she might have become a transvestite.
“I love being a girl,” she gushes. “I’m such a glamour girl. I would be a tranny [if I had been born male]! [Laughs.]”
While Kardashian is currently single, she still dreams about marriage and motherhood.
“Absolutely [I want to be married someday]!” she says. “I want four [kids]. My mom reminds me every day that at my age she had four.”
