Kim Kardashian spoke out on the ‘Today Show’ about MTV’s ‘Teen Mom’ and teen pregnancy which apparently upset the most infamous ‘Teen Mom’ Amber Portwood, prompting her to make a statement.
Kim Kardashian also wrote on her blog, “While I was at the ‘Today Show’ this morning I saw a story about a Memphis high school where 90 young female students were either pregnant or have given birth this year! I just couldn’t believe this and I find it so sad and disturbing. It seems that shows like ‘Teen Mom’ are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls. The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize!”
“When I think back to when I was 16, there is no way I would even have considered having a baby. That thought wouldn’t even have entered my head. Having a baby is one one of the biggest, and most life-changing decisions a person can make and while I’m not saying that no teen is in the position to raise a child, having a baby so young shouldn’t be seen as the trendy thing to do.”
“Girls, please, think very carefully before you make these kind of decisions. Talk to your family, friends, teachers, and most of all, be careful.”
MTV’s ‘Teen Mom’ “is a reality television series that premiered on MTV on December 8, 2009. The series is a spin-off of ‘16 and Pregnant,’ and chronicles the lives of four of the original teenagers from that series as they navigate their first year of motherhood. In addition to teenage motherhood, the series focuses on themes of changing relationships; specifically, those of the family, friends, couples, and school. It shows the struggles teenagers have to go through to raise their children.” (Wikipedia)
While the most infamous ‘Teen Mom’ Amber Portwood stated about Kim’s comments:
“There’s actually a study that shows since the original ‘16 and Pregnant’ aired, the number of teen pregnancies have gone down.”
“Last time I checked, Kim Kardashian had a sex tape floating around on the internet and I’m pretty sure she made a lot of money off of it. She made a sex tape when she was younger and she wants to bash the girls on ‘Teen Mom?’ If you read the articles about the show, they do nothing but talk about how the show reveals how hard it is for all of us. It doesn’t glamorize anything! It shows the heartache we’ve all gone through.”
“We may be ‘celebrities’ because our face is out there, but it’s only because we’ve done some bad things. That’s not glamorous.”
A couple of weeks ago Adam Lambert stated in his Tweet, “This Teen Mom show on MTV is so depressing. I know it’s “real life” but shouldn’t there be programming that inspires kids to shoot higher? #glorifyingwhitetrash”
Adam Lambert’s Tweet does have a point; ‘Teen Mom’ is depressing the reality TV does nothing to glorify being a ‘Teen Mom’ or dad.
New Jersey leads in statistics with 209 teenage pregnancies per 1000 teens, with the highest number of teen pregnancies in Newark, New Jersey.
