March 22, 2011 – A brand new season of Dancing With the Stars kicked off Monday night, surprising viewers with a great performance by Kirstie Alley. Meanwhile, promising contender Kendra Wilkinson disappointed with a flat cha cha.
There were quite a few surprises on Monday’s premiere of Dancing and Kirstie’s cha cha was one of the biggest. Most fans were expecting Kirstie to be a slow mover, especially after she was jokingly called a “grandma” by her pro-dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
However, once Kirstie stepped out on stage, it was evident that a slow mover she was not. The outspoken actress did more than impress the audience and judges with her quick moving steps.

Bruno Tonioli said her feet placement “was the best of the night” and Carrie Ann Inaba asked if she was over 40 (the Cheers star is 60). Kirstie and Maks got 23 points out of 30.
Another unexpected surprise was Kendra Wilkinson, although it was of the disappointing kind. Touted as the possible winner of the mirror ball trophy, Kendra was far from being a high contender.
The former Playboy model and current reality star, was slow with her cha cha legwork, while judge Len Goodman pointed out that she didn’t keep her legs straight. “It’s not clean, it’s gotta be clean” Bruno said referring to her steps.
The judges did compliment her on a hard number and an entertaining performance. Kendra and her pro-dance partner Louis Van Amstel received an 18 out of 30.

More surprising performances came from Ralph Macchio and his partner Karina Smirnoff, who took the best score of the night with a 24 out of 30. Then, came footballer Hines Ward with partner Kym Johnson who scored a 21 with their cha cha, as well as another 21 for Disney star Chelsea Kane and her partner Mark Ballas.
Dancing With the Stars comes back next Monday at 8:00 pm on ABC.
