Among Quad City ethnic restaurants, Thai food’s presence is rather small. There just aren’t very many – fortunately for the QCA, they are all very good. Kong’s Thai Bistro entered the scene last summer, and it’s a welcome addition. The Under-$10 diner can squeak by eating here, with some change left over – except for the interesting fried rice dishes, at $7.95, just about all of the entrees run $8.95. But there are some definite pluses that can make these prices worth it.
First, of course, is the quality and quantity of the food. It’s difficult to eat it all at one sitting, and it’s just plain good. The noodle dishes are highly recommended – the noodles themselves are so flavorful, aside from the tasty sauces, broths, and other additions. The currys also were very good – all marked as spicy, with those cute little red peppers to warn you, but the cook will knock back that heat if requested. Jasmine rice is served – it would be difficult to find a better tasting rice.
The menu has so much variety, making you want to come back. Barbequed Pork & Egg Noodle Soup? Fried Rice with Pineapple? The appetizers run $2.95 to $6.95, soups $3.50 to $6.50, and salads from $7.50 to $9.50. As noted, a little expensive. Lunch is very popular here – 8 entrees for $5.95, open 10:30 am to 2:00 pm.
The very special part of this restaurant is the decor. It actually LOOKS like a bistro – many don’t. It’s in an old building, with such a modern simple feel – brick walls, beautiful floors, and unusual Thai artwork. It’s a very pleasant place to enjoy a good meal.
