The weather is cooperating quite well in the Lake Tahoe region, setting the stage for an epic President’s Day weekend for skiing and snowboarding.
Some amazing snow totals have emerged from a huge storm that has bombarded the Lake Tahoe region all week. Fresh powder is a guarantee for anyone planning to visit one of Tahoe’s many ski resorts this weekend.
While the snow is expected to continue on Saturday (Feb. 19), dropping perhaps another half foot of snow, road conditions on Interstate 80 and Highway 50 have improved greatly, making for easier travel into the mountains. However, Caltrans still advises driving at safe speeds and be prepared to put on chains.
Kirkwood ski resort is buried in snow. The resort off Highway 88 is reporting 12 feet of snow in the past week and had 4½ feet on Friday.
It’s also been dumping at Homewood ski resort on Lake Tahoe’s west shore, where nearly 10 feet of snow has accumulated. Both Alpine Meadows and Boreal Mountain report just under nine feet of snow and Squaw Valley has eight feet over the past seven days.
The Weather Channel forecasts a 100 percent chance of more snow arriving today in the Tahoe region. That figure drops off greatly over the next two days – a 30 percent chance of snow on Sunday and 20 percent on Monday.
The snow may drop to as low as 1,500 feet, hitting many foothill communities due to the cold temperatures with the highs only reaching the mid-40s.
Expect cold weather at the ski resorts as well. Heavenly Mountain Resort is predicting mountain temperatures between 18-24 degrees for the next four days.
