Although mainstream Latin parties have consistently been hosted in clubs throughout Downtown, West Ashley, and North Charleston in the past, Charleston is currently down to only one – Southend Brewery. Cover is $5 and anyone who is 18 or older can participate in the fun. Thursday nights at the Brewery have been going strong now since 2003, with DJ Luigi mixing the beats all along. Although all of the music is Latin, it will be a little different depending on what time you get there. Anyone wanting to dance (or watch) Salsa, Bachata, and Merengue, needs to arrive when doors open at 10:00. The mood definitely changes at midnight when Reggaeton songs begin to dominate the club.
Because of the variety of genres at Southend, and the popular downtown location, an eclectic group of enthusiasts can be found here at different intervals of the night. During the first half of the night, one will probably find some serious dancers – people who want to show off their Salsa skills before it gets too crowded. At any given time of the night, however, you will see mostly Latin Americans, mixed in with some college students, a few Military, and the occasional tourists. Also, Southend tends to draw a wide spectrum of ethnicities and people of varying professions. Sometimes a group of friends passing by will succumb to the sensual rhythm of the music as it flows into the streets, and will either stand outside watching through the high glass windows, or decide to come inside and check it out. Age seems to range from 18 to 70 so don’t be shy if you think you’re getting too old – it’s never too late to start dancing!
For anyone who isn’t comfortable getting on the dance floor – too bad, because somebody will probably try to drag you out there anyway (especially if you are a female). But the bar is big and the servers are friendly, so a drink in your hand can always serve as a temporary excuse not to go twirling around like a crazy lady. That being said however, most people are eager to teach you the steps and will be very encouraging as you learn. Also, now is a good time to practice your Spanish! Most everyone speaks English but they like to test your Spanish skills since you are, after all, in a Latin Club. Thursday nights at Southend should be on everybody’s to-do list; it is a welcoming atmosphere and an experience that might even leave you longing for more!
