ICv2 recently reported that Fantasy Flight Games will release a new “Living Card Game” based on Lord of the Rings, the popular fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkein, in April 2011. ICv2 also reported that WizKids has announced a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products that will result in the addition of The Lord of the Rings property to their 2011 HeroClix release schedule. The first products in the new Lord of the Rings line will be a LOTR HeroClix Miniatures Game followed by a LOTR HeroClix Strategic Board Game, both of which will be released during the second half of 2011.
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is a cooperative card game that puts 1-2 players (or up to four with two Core Sets!) in control of the most powerful characters and artifacts of Middle-earth. Players will select heroes, gather allies, acquire artifacts, and coordinate their efforts to face Middle-earth’s most dangerous fiends. The Core Set includes 226 cards that can be used to assemble a wide variety of decks right out of the box. Included are three perilous quests that, along with countless combinations of settings and enemies, offer near-limitless replayability. Additionally, players can build a party from a set of 12 hero cards, and focus their decks on any combination of four distinct spheres of influence: Leadership, Lore, Spirit, and Tactics. Monthly 60-card expansion packs called Adventure Packs will introduce new quests, heroes, allies, attachments, events, and encounters, allowing players to fully customize their game and continue their fight against the Dark Lord.
“The Lord of the Rings” HeroClix miniatures game will be sold in two different packages: a campaign style box set and the traditional booster format. The all-in-one campaign style box set will include everything a player needs, including NEW epic level rules and maps. The booster format includes the figures, similar to other previous HeroClix releases. With whichever format chosen, all of the twenty or more figures will be compatible with other HeroClix miniatures games.
The semi cooperative HeroClix board game, following in the similar format of WizKids’ other HeroClix board game products. HeroClix figures, features a gameboard and several decks of cards that provide all the components needed to play this unique take on “The Lord of the Rings” story. The fun twist in the game is that players’ get to play as the Nazgul working with and against other Nazgul trying to capture the One Ring before it reaches Mount Doom.
