WBC PLANS TO PICKET FUNERALS OF ARIZONA SHOOTING VICTIMS
One of the main issues that divide theists and non-theists is the perception that all of us, on either side, are the same. It may be true that a majority of Christian theists are conservatives belonging to the Republican party and a majority of the non-theists are moderate to liberal members of the Democratic party, there exists hundreds and hundreds of thousands on both sides that fall into a myriad of other categories. The fact is that theism and atheism are, by definition, one point of view on one issue – the existence of deity. Atheists and theists come from all walks of life. I know both believers and unbelievers that identify themselves as Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, Conservatives, Socialists, Communists, Libertarians and Greens.
Most of the believers and unbelievers I know are ordinary folk. They get up, go to work or school and try to get through their day with a minimal amount of stress or conflict. By far, most are peaceful people who try to treat people kindly, get their bills paid, enjoy a little entertainment and grow the various relationships that intertwine within their lives. Most get long well with those around them and are not given to fits of rage every time someone mentions something that they don’t agree with.
Then there are the likes of those who make up the Westboro Baptist Church. If you don’t know who these clowns are and why they so dangerous, then I suggest you bookmark this article and do a little Googling. To call them extremists is an understatement. Unfortunately, whenever they show up with their horrific signs, it is almost exclusively atheists who flood the Internet and mainstream media with condemnation. The lack of condemnation from the religious world is appalling. In a nation where silence is usually aligned with acceptance, the appearance of agreement with the Westboro Baptist Church by mainstream Christianity is deafening.
Saturday, January 8th, 2011, tragedy struck in Tucson, Arizona. Jared Lee Laughner took aim at U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, striking her in the head with a 9mm bullet. There were many more bullets shot before he was subdued. Rep. Giffords was the intended target of this act of violence. Fortunately, she survived and may make a complete recovery. However, the shooting killed six people, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl. It also wounded 14 others.
Much of the mainstream media was covering any connection by the failed former Alaskan Governor, Sarah Palin, for any culpability in this violence. In addition to her special brand of hate-speech, Sarah Palin put literal crosshairs over Rep. Gifforts and twenty other representatives on one of her websites. But another band of wingnuts that immediately jumped into the fray.
Within hours the Westboro Baptist Church had released plans to picket the funerals of all those who were killed during Rep. Giffords appearance in Arizona. Here is a link to the PDF flyer that was downloaded from their website. You can also access it directly on their website, but GodHatesFags has been overwhelmed with traffic since they released their plans, making it very difficult for most people to access it.
Here is a direct copy/paste from their website:
THANK GOD FOR THE SHOOTER-6 DEAD!
WBC WILL PICKET THEIR FUNERALS!
Shooter Jared Lee Laughner opened fire at a Tucson, AZ grocery store at a political rally—shot 18, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords; killing 6, including federal Judge John M. Roll. God appointed this rod for your sins! God sent the shooter! This hateful nation unleashed violent veterans on the servants of God at WBC—hoping to silence our kind warning to obey God and flee the wrath to come.
Your soldiers & fellow citizens are dying for your sins!
Instead of hearing the rod, and Him that appointed it, you sent a crippled veteran (Ryan Newell) with 90 rounds of ammunition, hoping he’d shoot 5 WBC picketers dead. Your federal judge (in Baltimore) put WBC on trial for telling you God’s standard. Congress passed three laws against WBC.
So, God sent the shooter to shoot you! And He’s sitting in Heaven laughing at you!
Your federal judge is dead and your (fag-promoting, baby-killing, proud-sinner) Congresswoman fights for her life. God is avenging Himself on this rebellious house!
WBC prays for your destruction—more shooters, more dead carcasses piling up, young, old, leader and commoner—all.
Your doom is upon you! Praise His Name!
THANK GOD FOR HIS RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENTS
If you agree with any of this, then I have nothing but condemnation and contempt for the sick, twisted and socially retarded person you are. If you are within my circle of friends and family, then kindly send me a note stating your agreement with this tripe and the ideals set forth by the WBC so I can make it a special effort to have as little to do with you as humanly possible.
If you do not agree with this, then it is your responsibility to make your feelings known to anyone and everyone who will listen to you.
Take note that I am not addressing my fellow unbelievers here, but those of you who identify yourselves as Christians. One of the reasons there is so much division between theists and nontheists is because many atheists think that the majority of Christians support or are at least sympathetic to the views of the Westboro Baptist Church.
Atheists have to work very hard to dispel the stigma that has been attributed to us due to misconceptions about what atheism really is. Christians, if you don’t agree with what the Westboro Baptist Church espouses, then each and every one of you bears the responsibility to not only make it known, but you also bear the responsibility to condemn them, along with and beside the secular community. Yes, what they are doing is allowed by our constitution. They are protected from prosecution under the First Amendment. However, it is your own Apostle Paul who stated that while everything may be permissible, not everything is beneficial.
Christians: The Westboro Baptist Church makes you look bad, especially if you remain silent.
In the mean time, if you are of the mindset to get involved, then I suggest to bookmark their website and endeavor to join a counter-protest wherever they go. You will be in the good company of many of your fellow believers who also condemn this trash for what it is, hate speech that only serves to incite the type of behavior that we saw in Arizona yesterday.
