NFL pro Marion Barber declined to comment on bad boy behavior after being detained for “public disturbance.” Facing a questionable future with the Dallas Cowboys, the celebrity athlete’s more frequent off-the-field antics are linking up with his performance decline on the field.
MARION BARBER: WHAT HAPPENED IN BEVERLY HILLS?
Held by BHPD in a squad car, Barber was investigated but later released without arrest or citation. One blog reader claims his son, an employee at the hotel, was told Barber was “hitting on valet cashiers” when an “altercation” ensued, but Barber’s not talking. While keeping mum isn’t odd for Marion, his off-field behavior is disappointing fans who once adored the “it” player on the team.
MARION BARBER’S DECLINE: WILL HE GET THE BOOT?
The 27-year-old pro running back closed out his worst season yet in 2010 despite being one of the top-paid athletes in his position. Tanking in every stat category, rumors about Barber getting the boot from Cowboys head honchos are running rampid and the reputation of Barber is shifting.
THE MEDIA HAS IT OUT FOR MARION
Historically, the Minnesota native has garnered compliments for being “nothing” – but in a good way. Prior to the opening of the 2010-2011 season, Barber was applauded for taking time out to talk with high school kids, but recent reports don’t fall in his favor. In addition to blatant disobedience when new head coach Jason Garrett implemented mandatory dress code, articles like this and this both note a change in attitude and Barber’s off-field behavior isn’t behooving him.
BEAT WRITER: MARION BARBER IS “SELFISH” AND “UNPROFESSIONAL”
“He’s a selfish player who delights in drawing attention to himself,” says Dallas Morning News writer Gerry Fraley in his article titled ‘You couldn’t get a bag of footballs for Marion Barber in a deal’. He adds, “Marion Barber should be the first player out of the room after this season. … He carries himself in a very unprofessional manner.”
RB COACH: “YOU EITHER GET BETTER…OR GET WORSE”
Just last week, running back coach Skip Peete verbally hinted at closure on Barber’s future and “non-stop saga” – Both on the turf and off.
“I think it’s always open for change,” Cowboys beat writer Dave Halprin quotes Peete as saying. “The ability of guys change. The instincts of guys change…Like I always explain to those guys, you never stay the same. You either get better, or you get worse.”
HS STUDENT BELIEVES IN BETTER BEHAVIOR FOR PRO ATHLETES
One high school student believes she has insight into the effects of bad celebrity athlete behavior. Bad behavior off-the-field not only makes for bad PR, it can affect performance come game time.
“The trend, however, seems to be that athletes are becoming increasingly less admirable,” says the Jackson Liberty High School student-athlete. “They are plagued by scandals and legal problems. Sometimes, an athlete’s poor choices can have damaging effects on his or her career.”
BARBER’S BEHAVIOR HURTS FUTURE OPP WITH COWBOYS
Adds Halprin and his loyal subscribers, Barber’s detainment in Beverly Hills may have him checking out from more than just a hotel room.
“For Barber, who has an uncertain future with the Cowboys, this can’t help the situation.
