Tucked away on Winchester Boulevard near downtown Campbell is a local iconic culinary institution. Michi Sushi has been around for 35 years, boasting on their web site, “Once you walk through the door, you become a part of the Michi family.”
An adventure in dining – even at lunch
This Wine Examiner can vouch for becoming an instant member of the family. Visiting Michi Sushi is a very personal adventure in dining – combining fresh fish that’s flown in daily from all over the world, creative culinary creations, and personable, welcoming service – one really does feel like a member of the family.
The day was kind of rainy. While driving toward the French Culinary Institute in Campbell (newly acquired by the International Culinary Institute, New York), a couple of budding Certified Sommeliers stopped in for lunch. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm greeting, the immediate charm of the interior decor, and the understated elegance and ambiance.
The wine service was top notch
While most enjoy a beer or a sake from their very extensive list (be sure to ask for the full list) with their lunch, wine was the order of the day. According to Mike Shin, the expert server that day, the wine list is receiving an overhaul. Even with that, he was willing to retreat to the wine cellar to bring out a selection of local wines that would complement the meal. Note: Look for an update soon in this column detailing featured Santa Cruz Mountains wines.
Settling into the meal (after selecting an appropriate wine), Sheen Michi Shin, “Chef Extraordinaire,” entered the dining room to greet diners who were already tucked into their masterly prepared meals. Moving from table to table of the now nearly packed dining room, Chef Shin asked each person about their meal, and about their experience of Michi Sushi that day. He was universally responded to with adoring smiles and words of praise.
