MLS 2011 draft picks by round; Salgado, 17, is number one

by glow bass

January 13, the Vancouver Whitecaps surprised the pundits by selecting Omar Salgado first in the 2011 MLS Superdraft in Baltimore, Maryland. Salgado, only 17, is a 6’4 forward who has made six appearances with the U-20 U.S. Men’s National Team, including at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. The draft continued through three rounds and peppered with draft pick and allocation trades with one exception: the San Jose Earthquakes traded No. 15 overall selection and allocation money to Columbus Crew in exchanged for forward Steven Lenhart. Real Salt Lake only took one player in the draft, midfielder Jared van Schalk (52nd overall).

A whopping seven University of Akron players were selected and five of those in the first eight picks: Darlington Nagbe, Perry Kitchen, Zarek Valentin, Kofi Sarkodie, and Michael Nanchoff.

John Rooney, brother of Wayne, was selected by the New York Red Bulls (25th overall).
