Home and Living loves innovative people with spunk. Today we are taking with one such person, Kat Nouri, founder of Modern-twist for Product and Profile.
Q.: Kat, welcome to Home and Living! Tell us a little about who you are.
K.: I am the founder and creative director of Modern-twist; I grew up in a community that was passionate about nutrition, spirituality and organic farming. My father was a world-class athlete and produce importer, and I have a spiritual mother with a PhD in Nutrition. Carrying on those values, I believer that food, its preparation and gatherings bring people of all walks of life together. It follows then, that most inspiration for the product line we’ve selected have been based on where we have our most creative ideas, the kitchen table.
Q.: Let’s talk about Modern-Twist products.
K.: As a mother of three with a background in manufacturing/marketing and an innate sense for good design, I believe that what you eat on is as important as what you eat. Modern-twist products are 100% recyclable, reusable or plant based. We constantly strive for new ways to bring products to the marketplace that are eco-conscious, and provide better options for our everyday choices. Through design, our goal has been to try to inspire people to do the right thing for our planet with little effort on their part.
Q.: The placemats description says they are ‘food-safe silicone,’ what does that mean?
K.: By food-safe we mean that our product is so pure, that you can basically eat off of any M-t product.
One of our taglines is “Eco Chic products for a sustainable planet.” We hope to bridge the gap between eco- and designed products.
Modern-twist is a pioneer and the first company in the world to bring elegance to a material that was traditionally used in the medical industry. Silicone has fantastic properties and it is a natural element found in sand and rock. Our silicone is nonporous, making it germ free and contains no latex, vinyl and pthalates. It’s also heat resistance and extremely durable.
The products are not only safe for the consumer but also 100% recyclable through designated recycling locations. What we print on that silicone product exhibits our steadfast passion for the work of independent artists and designers—to promote the work of edgy artists that need better visibility. Hence our other tagline, “Bringing art to the table.”
Q.: What kind of suggestions do you have for readers that are seeking eco-friendly designed products. Where do they begin?
K.: We believe first and foremost, it should be the industry standard to manufacture products that are not only safe for the consumer, but also harmless to the planet. We don’t think the consumer should have to work so hard to look for these products that fall under this umbrella. It is the manufacturer and designer’s job to give back responsibly. It is the consumer’s job to hold vendors responsible to only provide them with top notch products that share those values. Buy more quality and less quantity.
” … making it germ free and contains no latex, vinyl and pthalates.”
Q.: Do you have an civic mission?
K.: Our passion is directed towards helping low income women, and bringing back our food source through local farmers into fast-paced communities.
• Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization with supporters in 150 countries around the world who are linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment.
• Women’s Action group WAGES is set up to gain economic security; WAGES’ mission is to build worker-owned green businesses that create healthy, dignified jobs for low-income women. We launch cooperatives where women develop personal and professional skills, become leaders, and gain economic security.
Q.: What are some of the reasons that homeowners should think about doing business with you?
K.: At Modern-twist we care what our products are made of. We have integrity in what we produce, support companies that act responsibly and provide a way to allow the consumer to adopt a better standard for their families. Design alone is not enough; however good design will enable the consumer to make a choice that is both aesthetically pleasing and safe for the planet.
Q.: Where are customers going to find the products and do you have a website for more information? Is there also a blog?
K.: http://www.modern-twist.com and http://www.modern-twist.com/blog/ respectively.
