In the future information is king, and moving that information is the job of Johnny. A mnemonic courier he uploads and stores data in his brain to be downloaded upon delivery. With a dangerously large amount of volatile data being transported for a deal gone bad Johnny has no way of extracting the package which will soon damage his brain if not removed.
Keanu Reeves (Johnny), Dina Meyer (Jane), Ice-T (J-Bone), Takeshi Kitano (Takahashi), Denis Akiyama (Shinji), Dolph Lundgren (Street Preacher), Henry Rollins (Spider), Udo Kier (Ralfi).
Johnny Mnemonic is an interesting film that combines high tech with a somewhat dark future in which a civil war is being fought with information. The story is fairly simple, Johnny has a bigger chunk of data in his brain than he should have. To make things worse, just about everyone is willing to kill him to get the data or render it useless. Despite the plot the film has enough interesting characters and action that it moves at a good pace and holds audience interest well.
Acting from Reeves was a serious disappointment however it is easy to see from this film why he was tapped for The Matrix. Meyer wasn’t bad but couldn’t connect enough with Reeves to save things. Ice-T was amusing but not quite interesting, as was Lundgren. Rollins put forth about the best performance while Kier was freaky as usual.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were nicely done with good attention to detail on sets and dark, industrial feeling backgrounds that fit the film well. Action based effects were also pretty good as was CGI though the film is showing some age at this point. Dialogue was good and interesting. Sound was well done as was the soundtrack.
Overall Johnny Mnemonic is an enjoyable sci-fi fantasy flick with soft edges. The film just never seems to develop to its full potential or generate a lot of energy though it is one of the better cyberpunk films. Sci-fi fans will surely want to see this one while others may find the quality and depth lacking.
With foul language, mild nudity, and plenty of violence save this for older teens and above.
Johnny Mnemonic is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
