For ten years, American Idol has owned Reality Music Television. The show has been rated number 1 for the last six consecutive seasons surpassing “All In The Family” and “The Cosby Show“ (both previously held the record for most consecutive number 1 ratings). Since 2002, hosts Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell have searched the country for the best singer according to your votes. The show modeled after the UK version “Pop Idol”, has singer hopefuls compete each week in a singing competition and the judges offer their critiques. Host Ryan Seacrest navigates the weekly series. In 2010 and 2011, the show replaced two of its’ most celebrated hosts in Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell with Jennifer Lopez, and Rocker Steven Tyler. Amazingly, this change hasn’t steered viewers attention away, and millions continue to watch.
ENTER NBC’s The Voice. “The Voice” is a vocal competition series modeled after Holland’s top-rated vocal talent discovery show, “The Voice of Holland.” The show has three phases. The first begins with the blind audition, then the competition enters into a battle phase, and finally, the live performance shows. The show features four musician coaches, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, who will coach only the most talented vocalists. It is Hosted by Carson Daly.
LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!
In this corner, we have the undefeated, undisputed Heavyweight Champion “American Idol.” In the right corner, we have the young, hip, quick challenger “The Voice.” Let’s go to the Tale of The Tape:
THE HOSTS: Carson Daly vs. Ryan Seacrest
Okay so some of you might be thinking to yourself…Carson Daly, I know that name but from where? I’ll admit, that was my first thought then it hit me; MTV’s TRL. Carson Daly was the host of that show. Oh and he is also the host of “Last Call” on NBC. Carson also has 456 Entertainment that produces Television programming. So based on his resume and his music acumen from TRL, he should succeed as the host for “The Voice”. However, Seacrest has built an entertainment Empire that includes him as the host of E! News, Radio, and producing Reality Shows such as the Kardashians’ Reality Enterprise. —ADVANTAGE: AMERICAN IDOL.
DUELO De LAS LATINAS: Jenny From The Block vs. The Diva
If this were a Telenovela it would probably be named Duelo De Las Latinas. Here you have probably the best legs in Hollywood Jennifer Lopez matched up against one of the most powerful voices in music Christina Aguilera. Jennifer Lopez’ career needs no recounting. Jennifer is an accomplished Dancer, Actress, and Singer. She is also married to highly acclaimed and very popular Latin Singer/Songwriter Marc Antony. By the same token, Christina’s career is no ‘slouch’ either. We all know she has a remarkable voice, but Christina is also an actress and dancer, and married to Music marketing Executive Jordan Bratman. J-Lo or Christina [I have to say this one was the hardest]? Who gets the advantage? Let’s stack ‘em up.
Who is the better singer? I love Jennifer Lopez but lets be real. It wasn’t her singing that made her a successful singer. It was her performing, and her production. As far as I am concerned, Jennifer peaked as a singer when P. Diddy was doing her production. On the other hand, Christina Aguilera voice is crazy; and if we are talking purely about singing, then Christina is the better singer.
Who is the better performer? Don’t everyone yell Jennifer Lopez all at once. At least hear me out about why Christina is a better performer than you think. First, she received her nickname “The Diva” from her days on Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club (which co-starred Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears). She also did an eye opening job in her recent movie Burlesque. Okay, who am I kidding. Jennifer Lopez owns this one.
Who is the better actress? This category is a push for me. Jennifer Lopez has been in more movies and television shows, but her roles hasn’t been stellar performances. Selena hands down has been Jennifer Lopez’ best acting role. Christina has done numerous acting roles as well but let’s be real, can you name any of them outside of the last one? Exactly! I am inclined to give this a push with a slight advantage to Jennifer Lopez.
Who has the better Hubby? Jennifer Lopez knows how to snag a man. If we don’t count her early relationships (before the fame), J-Lo has used her Latina heat to snag some pretty big fish from P. Diddy to Ben Afflack to now husband Marc Antony. Christina Aguilera has been linked to Justin Timberlake, but then we heard Britney Spears took him from her. Any girl who loses a man to Britney Spears tells me her Latina heat has yet to catch fire, and what is her husband’s name again? ADVANTAGE JENNIFER LOPEZ!
So although we give the advantage of our head to head duel to Jennifer Lopez, this is a singing competition so overall we give this ADVANTAGE PUSH!
THE REST OF THE FIELD: Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton vs. Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson
Is this really fair? This really comes down to the hottest artists of today’s music vs. the legendary artists and producers that have helped to shape American Music. If you really look at it in that manner, than your (and my) views are really a matter of taste and what you like. When American Idol first began in 2002, most of us probably only really knew Paula Abdul. I had no idea who were Simon Cowell or Randy Jackson (how about you?). It took us some years to really trust them as music experts, and because Simon was notorious for being the hated judge, after a while it didn’t matter if they were experts as long as we were entertained. However, Adam Levine (front man for Maroon 5), Hip Hop turned Rock Artist Cee Lo Green (formally with Legendary Atlanta Hip Hop Goodie Mob), and Country Star Blake Shelton are current chart toppers. Moreover, Adam Levine is regarded as a Hollywood Sex Symbol. The combination of these three musicians is a good ingredient for success for “The Voice”. Each bring tremendous credibility in Hip Hop, Rock n Roll, and Country Music. Yet it’s hard to give the advantage automatically to NBC because Fox has proven that their hosts have succeeded. After weighing all of the odds, I am going to say….ADVANTAGE NBC’s THE VOICE.
Regardless of what my Tale of the Tape above points out, NBC is looking for their new Reality Music Series “The Voice” to attract music lovers and Idol fans this summer. Based on the star power of the judges and the noted success in Reality Television from the producers, NBC’s “The Voice” should be a hit amongst American viewers this summer. The show uses all the advantages of the internet and technology that should boaster viewership. We will have to wait and see if the show will take over Reality Music TV supremacy, and “knock out” the current champ American Idol, but it surely will be fun to watch.
