The Nassau County Museum of Art is open with new exhibitions and programs for this year.
Nassau County Museum of Art is located 20 miles east of New York City in Roslyn Harbor, Long Island on the former Frick Estate, a spectacular 145-acre property in the heart of Long Island’s fabled Gold Coast. Once administered by Nassau County’s Office of Cultural Development, NCMA became a private not-for-profit institution in 1989.
Family Sunday at the Museum, beginning at 1 p.m. every Sunday, starts with a family-friendly docent-led tour of the gallery. This is followed by a supervised art activity at 1:30 p.m.. The program is free with admission.
The Art Space for Children, open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 pm to 4:30 pm, is available for children’s tea parties, birthdays, other events and exhibition viewing all in a charming environment perfect for young visitors.
One of the highlights of the Art Space for Children is Astolat Castle, a 1/12-scale representation of a nine-foot tall, five-foot wide structure. The castle was designed and created by Colorado artist Elaine Diehl who was inspired by Lady Elaine’s fantasy castle in Tennyson’s “Lady of the Lake.” This miniature version on view at the Art Space for Children includes furniture, sculpture, artwork, lighting and more, all created by miniaturist artisans from around the world.
Architect Lee H. Skolnick has been commissioned to expand the existing building that houses the Art Space for Chidlren, planned for children ages 3 to 12.
Families Making Art Together
Two school vacation break programs are available for children ages 5-12 and their adult companions. The winter and spring school vacation weeks feature hands-on art making for children of all ages and their adult companions. Inspired by the shapes and colors to be seen in the museum’s current exhibition of works by painter Milton Avery, museum docents will be in the galleries to assist young visitors to develop their own creative responses to what they are seeing in the galleries. The programs are free with museum admission. No reservations are needed.
February 22-25, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
