Do not worry if you feel stiff to begin with. Your body just is not accustomed yet to exercise. Your aches and pains will stop as you gradually get fitter.
Do not stretch to a breaking point
Stretching is the number one way to ease your new feeling of aches and pains with exercise. When you are warming up and cooling down, make sure you do the stretching exercises slowly and gradually. Any short jerky movements can make your muscles contract and be more liable to damage.
Time for a reward
Take a shower or bath to cool down after you exercise and relax your tired muscles. Take your time and enjoy it, do not rush it. This is a reward time for you and your muscles.
When not to exercise
- If you have a heavy cold or a raised temperature.
- If you have or developed chest pain.
- If you have persistent joint or muscle pains for which you have not received professional advice.
- If the weather is extremely hot or cold.
