It’s time to get away from a bit of the drama right now because let’s face it, times are kind of slow in the NFL as the Super Bowl was just played a mere four days ago. Already I’m tired of the big deal being made about Sean Payton buying a house in Dallas when it’s really nothing to cry about.
The rumor that his pregnant mistress lives over there though is pretty funny.
Let’s turn our attention to more serious matters and that is the 2011 NFL Draft. Labor talks are ongoing in Washington D.C. between the NFL and NFLPA so hopefully a new CBA can be agreed upon soon. Still, the draft will go on come April and it’s time to see when the New Orleans Saints will be picking.
As it currently stands, the Saints have only five picks in the upcoming draft.
- First Round – 24th
- Second Round – 24th
- Third Round – 8th
- Third Round – 24th
- Seventh Round – 23rd
Their first round pick is the 24th spot due to their final record in 2010 and advancement into the playoffs. Actually, the second round pick is the same considering that how teams finish the season is exactly how each round of the draft is supposed to go. Trades and other such things are what alter the order.
New Orleans has two picks in the third round with one being their chosen spot of 24th. That first pick though (8th) comes to them via the Jammal Brown trade with the Washington Redskins last year. This trade is also the reason the Saints don’t have a fifth round pick as it went to Washington.
Center Matt Tennant being draft last year is the reason the team doesn’t have a fourth round pick as they traded it to move up for him. The Saints have no sixth round pick due to tight end David Thomas‘ playing time on the roster and it eventually heading over to New England. The Patriots racking up draft picks should come as no surprise to any football fan though.
Finally there is the 23rd pick in the seventh round which is again just the way the order was dealt to them.
A total of five picks with four of them coming rather early on in the draft. Not a lot quite honestly and I’d expect a few trades to happen so that Payton and Mickey Loomis can snag another couple picks here and there. Considering that Will Smith could possibly be suspended four games to start the season, the Saints may want to look for some young talent along the defensive line.
