The University of Nebraska-Omaha wrestling program — ranked No. 1 in the nation, and defending NCAA Division II champs — lost to No. 3 St. Cloud State, 19-18, at Sapp Fieldhouse in Omaha Friday night.
Going into the last match of the evening, it appeared the Mavericks had the dual-meet win locked up, having won six of the nine matches to that point. With UNO leading 18-13 heading into the 133-pound bout, the Mavs’ Trent Cox had a 3-0 lead (and 2:43 riding time) on St. Cloud State’s Eric Ellington. However, Ellington flipped Cox and scored a quick pin at 3:42, giving the Huskies the come-from-behind 19-18 win.
With the win, St. Cloud State is now 13-1 for the season, while the loss dropped UNO to 5-1 on the year in duals. It was the first dual-meet loss for the 2010 NCAA D2 champs since Jan. 22, 2010, when Augsburg College defeated UNO, 18-12, and first dual loss at home since a 22-15 loss to Division I University of Northern Iowa on Feb. 21, 2008.
