NEW YORKERS ARE EXCITED (and guardedly optimistic) about this weekend’s AFC Championship game, where the NY Jets (13-5) go up against the Pittsburgh Steelers (13-4) to see who will represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLV. Almost every bar in the city will offer up the opportunity to help cheer on the team (though many, like Traffic on 52nd and 2nd St are already booked with events, while others are charging an arm and a leg just to watch the game and eat a few wings).
We’ve rounded up some of our favorite social options, along with drinking opportunities if you’re watching the game from a nachos-encrusted sofa.
Jets Uncorked Wine: We don’t know if the Jets are the only NFL team with their own wine (does Sonoma even have a team?), but they’re the only one in the 2011 AFC Championship game with such a distinction. Gang Green teamed with Napa Valley winemaker Marco DiGiulio to create a limited-edition 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. Offer this wine up as an alternative to Bud Light, or if girlfriends and wives who don’t wish to be watching are in attendance. You’ll be glad you did. On Friday, January 21, Park Avenue Liquors (292 Madison Ave at 41st St) is offering a tasting of Jets Uncorked in anticipation of the game, and also throwing in $5 off per bottle to boot.
48 Lounge (1221 Ave of the Americas between 6th and 7th) is offering up both the NFC and AFC games on its giant-screened TVs. No sterile sports bar, this, 48 is a large, lush lounge with a relaxed, stylish vibe (though it will be packed. Doors open at 2:30p on Sunday January 23rd. You find drink specials all night like $5 Bud and Bud Light, half-off shots and $10 specialty cocktails (along with food discounts). For reservations, call 212.554.4848 or email [email protected]
Village Pourhouse and SideBAR are serving up specialty cocktails and airing the game. At all locations, you’ll find the Gang Green Cocktail (Vision Vodka and Sprite) and Dirty Sanchez Shots (we know, we know… really Washington Apple Shots).
Some locations are offering up Jets-themed cocktails throughout the week. We’re guessing the cocktails will stay on the menus if the Jets overtake the Steelers.
