OPI released it’s Katy Perry Collection at the end of last month, fresh on the heels of the first Serena Williams collection. Star collaborations seem to be the way OPI is going in 2011, similar to Deborah Lippmann’s collections, although at a much lower cost. The Katy Perry Collection consists of four colors and includes their new Black Shatter top coat which literally gives the effect of cracked polish.
The first color in the Katy Perry Collection is Not Like The Movies. This color has a gray/purple base. It’s not quite a holographic or a duochrome, however depending on how the light hits the polish it changes colors. There are red, blue and purple tones to it. It’s a bit light as a color on its own, however under the Shatter or with a sheer glitter top coat it would look amazing.
The second color in the Katy Perry Collection is Last Friday Night. This color is a very sheer blue base that has blue and silver microglitter packed into it. With several coats there would still be nail showing underneath, so this is a color you would definitely want to layer over blue. If you want to stick with OPI, it would look fabulous over Yoga-ta Get This Blue! On it’s own, the color is a bit bland, but would work great as an accent to a darker manicure.
The next two colors go hand in hand. First up is The One That Got Away. This color is very bright, almost magenta with some raspberry mixed in, with a bit of foil shimmer and glass fleck to it. This color is deep and vibrant, by far the most intense of the entire collection. Teenage Dream has the same formula as Last Friday Night, but in a pale pink packed with silver glitter. Even with several coats Teenage Dream will not totally cover your nail. However when you layer two coats of the One That Got Away with one layer of Teenage Dream, the look is a deep pink with light pink sparkle and is gorgeous.
Unfortunately OPI did make one mistake with the Katy Perry Collection and that is that it’s not readily available, and if it is, generally not with the Black Shatter. Websites are severely back ordered, so if you see it in the stores, grab it up! The effect looks amazing, just keep in mind that China Glaze is coming out with their own Crackle collection now that will have six colors versus OPI which just has Black Shatter. All in all, this collection is ok, not one of OPI’s best due to the lack of vibrant color and the sheerness of two of the polishes, but the Shatter is amazing as is The One That Got Away.
