If you are a runner, you know this is generally a solo sport. However, it is definitely safer to run and walk with others. If you do not have someone to run or walk with, here are some tips to help keep you safe.
Carry a cell phone with you
Carry a walking stick (not a skinny, little stick, but something substantial)
If an area gives you an uneasy feeling, go somewhere else
Pay attention to your surroundings
Tell someone where you will be going
Walk with your dog
If you like to listen to music as you walk/run, consider not doing that when going to a new area
If you have ear buds in, take them out occasionally to hear what is going on around you
Do not wear jewelry
Stay away from stray animals
If you do encounter a dog, do not run away from it. Just stop. Put your hands on your hips to make yourself look bigger and face the dog. Do not make eye contact or try to talk sweet to it. Keep your eye on it and it should go away. If it is aggressive and tried to approach you, use your stick to keep it away from you.
