You’ve probably heard the expression “I laughed… I cried” applied to a film before. Well, this is exactly the case for me at the recent Orlando Screening of “No Strings Attached”. In case you have been turned off by the idea of “no strings” trivializing sex you will be pleasantly surprised that the film actually promotes the concept of having a real meaningful relationship. Ashton Kutcher ( Killers) as Adam, and Natalie Portman (Star Wars III) as Emma, make a perfect on screen couple. It’s nice to see the Golden Globe winner (Portman) in a comic role, after her darker role in the phycological thriller “Black Swan”.
In the opening scene the director Ivan Reitman( “Up in the Air” & “Animal House”) wastes not time letting you know you’re in for major laughs. Adam and Emma first meet in summer camp where Adam asks her awkwardly “ Can I FXXXXR you?” He is so blunt… so wrong… and yet so funny! Obviously ends up leaving camp having unsuccessfully trying to make it to ‘third base’ with her.
The story follows a series of chance meetings where sparks obviously fly between the couple, but never seem to ignite. That is until 15 years later when Emma suggests they become friends with benefits, with no strings attached. Adams friends Eli (Jake M. Johnson) ,and Wallace (Ludacris) are envious of Adam, and think he living the dream of every man. The problem is Adam has always had a crush on Emma and is falling deeper in love by the day.
Kevin Kline ( “Dave” & “Fish called Wanda”) co-stars as Alvin, Adam’s womanizing actor dad,and his new ‘mid life crisis’ Vanessa (Ophelia Lovibond) who happens to be Adam’s former girlfriend. This sets up even more comical situations for the ensemble. Lake Bell (“It’s Complicated”) was funny as a quirky production assistant infatuated with Adam. Cary Elwes (Princess Bride) makes a cameo as the handsome Dr. Metzner. Actress Mindy Kaling ( “The Office”) is hilarious as Shira, Emma’s wise cracking co-worker. But its Ludacris who practically steals every scene he is in with some great ‘one liners’.
If you are up for a little romance, and lots of laughs I suggest to get out to see this film!
