It doesn’t take a great deal of wisdom, or Einstein-like genius, to realize that there’s something wrong with our world today. Corruption is etched in the very fabric of our society, in civilization itself, and even we have not escaped it’s contamination. This is reflected in everything around us, no matter what city or town you live. These changes descend deeper than what’s regularly reported by the mainstream media, using familiar words such as economy, recession, unemployment, civil unrest, crime, murder, disease, and the like. The problems go much deeper, cutting to the very core of human nature itself.
We live in the age of reason, or as others might refer to it, the age of science. The human intellect is exalted, and our lofty achievements are worshipped on a grand scale never before seen. We utilize technology today that surpasses that of any age before us, propelling us into uncharted territory. Nevertheless, despite all of these wonderful and innovative things, there is an undercurrent of fear. Many feel that we are in the greatest peril in all of human existence, and that we’re on the fringe of an unknown future. Whether we choose to accept it or not, we are experiencing a major sociological paradigm shift.
Why are we facing unparalleled chaos on such a global scale? What is the cause of the dark tempests that are covering the planet? Many people believe that we are on the verge of a new age of enlightenment that will transform us into something much greater than we are now. This belief, embraced by many spiritual people around the world, is at best wishful thinking, and at worst, a great deception engineered by something perhaps more dangerous and sinister than we can imagine. The vast majority of the western world has moved away from many of the time-tested traditional beliefs we once embraced. Our society has largely abandoned our spiritual foundation, the source of our long term stability, and traded it for a new faith in pop-culture and other philosophies.
Record numbers of people of all ages are rejecting their belief and faith in the God of the Bible, and searching elsewhere. Nowadays, the idea of believing the scriptures, and trusting Jesus Christ, has become politically incorrect. Christianity is being attacked and ridiculed on all sides, and many are running for the hills. Just as the existence of Jesus, and the infallibility of the Bible has been called into question in recent years, those who believe will continue to be misunderstood by the scholars of our modern world.
Despite the breakdown of modern society around us, we who are true Christ-followers are to be ‘salt and light’ (Matthew 5:13-16), and although we are to live in the world, we are not to be influenced by it (John 17:6-19). The Bible makes it clear that the spirit of our age, the guiding force in the post-modern world, will continue to lead the world into greater confusion and darkness until all things are made new (Revelation 20,21). The state of the world will continue growing darker, but God is still sovereign, and will guide us through the lies that threaten to consume us. His light shines in the darkness, and the darkness will not overcome it.
