Fashion never sleeps, or so the saying goes. And for that matter, neither do the people that work in fashion. But when it comes time to researching upcoming trends by route of pouring over beautiful designer runway collections–and I do use the word ‘research’ loosely– it all is worth it! I mean, who wouldn’t love to look at runway photos and call it work? With that said, after much examination, scrutiny, investigation (or whatever you may call it) and deliberation, I have picked out some of my personal favorite emerging trends for Pre-Fall 2011.
Pumpkin & Spice
Color was rampant on the runways for this season. Which is a nice relief from the usual army of black that invades come cooler months. Not that I mind black, but when we’re talking rich turquoises, punchy pinks, luxurious golds, color blocking, it’s hard not to get a little rush! But the tones I thought stood out amongst the myriad of colors, were the very Fall-appropriate shades of spice and pumpkin. Albino sent the most gorgeous spice-colored pants down the runway. I love that they paired them with a surprising mustard turban. Chloe went ultra luxe, with pumpkin orange sweaters and brown suede trousers. It had a very grown-up 70’s vibe about it. And even Wang, the notorious king of black, incorporated a spicy orange into their collection. I feel as if this color may the be ‘it’ color, come fall. Or at the very least, it will be the color I am wearing!
Dark + Lean
Models are always tall, but they seemed particularly so this season. That may have been due to the lean, dark and tailored looks sent down the runway. Oversized, which has been huge (pardon the pun) in the past, is suddenly non-existent. Burberry had pant suits and dresses with an accent on the natural waist, creating mile-long legs. The Row took a very sultry spin, by offering little glimpses of skin. Whether it was toned arms and shoulders or a sliver of thigh, it’s definitely a look any woman would love to wear. And any look that’s slenderizing and lengthening is fine by me!
In the Boardroom
It feels like each season, the suit gets reinvented. This season’s suit seems to be taking some serious inspiration from a certain Hollywood legend, Miss Katherine Hepburn. Nobody wore pants like her. She was famous for wide legged-trousers, tailored jackets, classic blouses and her loafers. She was an icon, and emulating an icon is never a bad thing. Antonio Marras was a standout for me when it comes to suit wear. The whole look was very lean, relaxed, a little tomboyish, very Hepburn. The Row also managed to produce some looks that could easily turn into a classic. There’s a reason suits never seem to go out of fashion.
In conclusion, there is much to look forward to for Pre-Fall 2011. An insurgence of color into our wardrobes! Clothes that create a gorgeous, flattering silhouette. Classic, wardrobe staples that channel some of the best old-hollywood had to offer. I know we still have Spring and Summer to make it though, but my mind is already swimming with possibilities!
