Last week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars was titled, The New Normal. In case you missed it, and WHY would you?, here’s what’s new and normal for the PLLs.
As the episode began, the Liars decided to decipher the braille message Toby had discovered in Jenna’s room. Looking up the braille alphabet online, the girls incorrectly translate the message to read BAD.
Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) grew closer, while narrowly escaping discovery by Mrs. Marin (Laura Leighton), who was dealing with a surprise visitor supposedly related to Mrs. Potter, the woman from whom Hanna’s Mom borrowed money from her deposit box. James Leland, supposed heir to Mrs. Potter’s safe deposit box turned up at Mrs. Marin’s door but it’s a lucky thing that Caleb just so happened to be there. He helped Hanna do a little digging and discovered that Mrs. Potter’s James Leland was dead.
Mrs. Marin doesn’t do anything at first, but by the end of last week’s episode, she no-so-casually lets Leland know she knows he’s not who he says he is.
Aria’s (Lucy Hale) dad Byron (Chad Lowe) misunderstood remarks made by his wife, Ella (Holly Marie Combs) regarding Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding), thinking his wife had a crush on her fellow teacher. That lead to an interesting parent/teacher conference between Byron and Ezra, with Ezra misreading the interrogation to suggest that Byron was onto Ezra’s relationship with Aria. Following their encounter, Byron tells Aria he hates Fitz. Perhaps spurred on by her father’s apparent disproval, Ezra and Aria end up in a heavy make-out session at his place, interrupted by a Byron calling his daughter to apologize, which put a temporary damper on their liplock.
Paige’s (Lindsey Shaw) father, Nick McCullers (Connor Trinneer) showed up at school accusing Emily (Shay Mitchell) of receiving special treatment after rejoining the swim team, because of her sexuality. When Emily’s Mom (Nia Peeples)heard about Mr. McCullers’ outburst, she finally began to change her opinions, or at least realize her daughter is still her daughter, regardless of her sexuality.
While that whole storyline was eventful, that’s not all that happened with Emily last week. In the night’s most surprising, yet totally expected moment, Paige chases after Emily, gets into her car and plants one on her. After they kiss, Paige pleads, “Don’t tell,” leaving Emily stunned and alone.
Spencer (Troian Bellisario) goes over to Toby’ (Keegan Allen) to make sure the braille message isn’t a joke. All he will admit is that it was no joke, and that she is misreading it. He then rushes her out of the house in order to make a meeting with the DA, but asks her to come overt Saturday when Jenna will be gone.
As Spencer is leaving Toby’s she gets a text from A reading, ” “Jenna is going to be sooo pissed.”
After narrowly avoiding Jenna, Spencer figures out that in braille, certain configurations mean not only letters, but numbers, so the message actually reads 214. Neither Toby nor Spencer know what that means, but Toby is still showing signs of being afraid to cross Jenna.
When Toby’s murder charge gets dropped, he and Spencer go for a ride. As the episode ends, the pass a hotel. In true PLL style, there’s a clue hidden within the episode’s final seconds, as the camera pauses on the hotel and focuses in on, you guessed it, room #214.
Pretty Little Liars airs Monday nights on ABC Family at 8/7c.
