Flint area fans were happy to see a new ‘Private Practice’ air last night. In the ‘Heaven Can Wait ’ episode, Addison (Kate Walsh) tries to plan and process her mother’s wedding to Susan (Ann Cusack), while dodging flirtations from Dr. Rodriguez (Christian de la Fuente). Sheldon (Brian Benben) tries to help Charlotte (KaDee Strickland) in her recovery process by referring her to his mentor. One Flint viewer who has followed Charlotte’s storyline closely said, ‘I am so impressed with KaDee Strickland’s performance, and I think it’s great that Shonda Rhimes is taking Charlotte very slowly through the recovery process. If she was just over everything suddenly, it wouldn’t be real.’
Charlotte has suffered a lot of emotional ups and downs in the past few weeks, in the wake of her attack. Cooper (Paul Adelstein) tells Sheldon Charlotte isn’t sleeping and is terrified all the time. Sheldon refers her to a psychiatrist, Larry, whom he considers his mentor. Charlotte tells Larry she can’t sleep, she’s been sad, and she can’t have sex with her boyfriend. He acts disinterested (because he is on the verge of his own psychotic break) and she blanches –saying she doesn’t want to talk. He prescribes a ‘cocktail’ of drugs to help her in lieu of therapy and she leaves, shocked.
Later, she lies in bed with Cooper, and apologizes for her inability to have sex. He assures her it’s okay, he can wait till she’s ready. She says with desperation, ‘What if I’m never ready?’ Cooper assures her that she will know when she is.
RAINN (Rape Abuse Incest National Network) reports:
‘Many survivors of sexual assault suffer from depression and/or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). As a result, they may also experience sleep disturbances and disorders. Sleep can be difficult for trauma victims to feel secure and unthreatened.’
RAINN also provides the following advice to a victim’s friends or family members:
‘Help to empower your loved one. Rape and sexual assault are crimes that take away an individual’s power, it is important not to compound this experience by putting pressure on your loved one to do things that he or she is not ready to do yet.’
Rape recovery can be a lengthy step-by-step process. Rhimes, who has partnered with RAINN for this storyline, is tracking Charlotte and Cooper’s attack aftermath closely to reflect this.
Meanwhile, Naomi (Audra McDonald) calls Addison out on a flirtation from Dr. Rodriguez. She accuses Addison of being tempted by him. Addison refutes it, but then rushes to propose to Sam (Taye Diggs). Sam senses something is wrong and doesn’t give her an answer. Addison frets over planning Bizzy’s (JoBeth Williams) wedding, and she is still upset her mother never thanked her for saving Susan. Before the wedding, Bizzy sends her to see if Susan is dressed for photos. Susan confides to Addison that she is sick again and makes her promise not to tell Bizzy.
After the beautiful ceremony, Charlotte and Cooper discuss getting married ‘someday’ and Addison is thrilled when Bizzy thanks her in her own way for helping Susan and planning the wedding. In her bliss, Addison retracts her proposal to Sam. She also assures Naomi she is committed to making things work this time with Sam. Dr. Rodriguez ends up dancing with Amelia. (Caterina Scorsone)
Cooper stops Charlotte on the way to the restroom for a quick kiss. Charlotte pulls him into a heated embrace and whispers, ‘I’m fine. I’m really fine,’ and they go make love in a room marked ‘ice’.
It seems Charlotte is making a first step toward a deeper recovery and Addison is taking a step toward learning how to stay in one relationship and stay committed. Everyone converges as the show closes with Susan’s collapse.
