To learn more about Canadian Prime Ministers and other Canadian or Quebec politics, both McGill University and Concordia University in Montreal offer wonderful political science degrees.
English Montrealers are enjoy British history while French Montrealers enjoy the history of France.
The Marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert
Though the young Queen was very fond of lord Melbourne his influence on her had severe consequences. The closeness of the couple was not accepted in Victorian times. There were rumours that the two were to be married and there were more sinister rumours that the relationship was not wholesome, not proper for the Queen of England. In 1837 the Times editor, Thomas Barnes wrote, “Is it for the Queen’s service – is it for the Queen’s dignity – is it becoming – is it commonly decent?”
The Unpopular Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria was becoming more and more disliked by her British subjects, her distance from the commoners, her inability to understand their needs and her own personal actions lead to their disfavour.
An incident occurred soon after Lord Melbourne returned to power. The Queen spotted one of her bedchamber maids, Lady Flora Hastings, getting into a carriage with Sir John Convoy. Shortly afterward, Lady Hastings looked pregnant. The enraged Queen Victoria accused Lady Hastings of having an affair with Sir John Conroy. Lady Hastings swore that she was not having any affair, nor was she pregnant. Her word was not good enough for Queen Victoria and so she ordered Lady Hastings to undergo a medical examination.
The examination proved that Lady Hastings was not pregnant but had liver cancer. Lady Hastings died a few months later and Queen Victoria again lost favour with her subjects who saw her as a very cold-hearted monarch.
From this point forward there were several attempts on the Queen’s life.
