English alternative rock band Radiohead bring new meaning to secrecy when they announced today their new LP will be titled The King of Limbs, and the release date is only a mere five days away on February 19, 2011.
The February 19, 2011 release of Radiohead’s eighth studio album The King of Limbs will be for download, and the hard copy worldwide release date will be March 28, 2011.
The King of Limbs will be Radioheads first studio album since releasing their now Gold album, In Rainbows on October 10, 2007. While promoting their last album, Radiohead came to Chicago and headlined the cities biggest festival, Lollapalooza.
Radiohead will be self-releasing The King of Limbs, and offering two different packages to choose from: Deluxe physical format and download for $48 and an instant download for $9. The digital version will be available on Saturday, while the physical version will ship on May 9, 2011.
The deluxe version comes with two 10-inch vinyl albums, one CD, “many large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork, and a full-color piece of oxo-degradeable plastic to hold it all together.”
No track listing has been made public, and no 2011 tour dates have been announced, but with releasing a new album there should be a tour announcement soon to follow.
The vagueness and lack of information about Radioheads upcoming 2011 LP proves how big, and in control the band has become. Record companies prep months of publicity by giving the public little announcements every couple of weeks about an upcoming album (album title, track listing, tour, street date, package ordering details, etc) all spawned out over a 3 months period. With Radiohead, they simply announced the album title, and street date via their website.
It is refreshing to see a band simply, ‘put it out there’ and not drag on months of promotion, like so many other artists are doing now. This also helps cut down on the album leaking. Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke did have an original song on the The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack titled “Hearing Damage” which played during the scene when Victoria escapes the wolf pack. Any Radiohead fans also fans of the Twilight series, or are you glad to finally hear new music not associated with that franchise?
