Democrats oppose the Patriot Act by almost five to one compared to Republicans, yet a slight trend may be developing in GOP support of such bills. In an interesting twist following Congress’ historical failure to renew the Patriot Act last week, Democrats are migrating to the bill while Republican opposition is gaining. Opposition to the bill by Republicans has nearly tripled since last year’s vote.
A member of the Cato Institute who has been described as a ‘millionare businessman’ is among the now 27 Republicans who opposed the renewal of three provions of the Patriot Act on Monday.
Freshman Republican Congressman Richard L. Hanna joined the ranks of 26 other Republicans who opposed renewal of Patriot Act, which has been described as a tyrannical abuse of power. Hanna, who represents New York’s 24th District, was one of five Republicans who had not voted on the February 8th Patriot Act roll call. In February 8th vote, 2/3rd majority was required in order to renew the bill. The bill will now go to the Senate, where it is expected to pass but will face oppositon by Senator Rand Paul.
Hanna ran for Congress in 2008 but lost to Democrat incumbent Mike Arcuri. He tried again and beat Arcuri last Novemeber, garnering 53% of the vote. Hanna is a member of the National Rifle Association and ran a successful construcion business, Hanna Construction, after graduating college.
“The office belongs to all of us,” Hanna has been quoted as saying. The Utica Observer Dispatch described Hanna as a “socially moderate” Republican not afraid to criticize the party. Before his election, Hanna said he thinks there is some “subtle bigotry” involved in Tea Party groups, but that he respects “people’s right to band together and complain.” Former President Bill Clinton personally endorsed Hanna’s opponent incumbent Democrat Mike Arcuri during the 2010 campaign.
Hanna is not to be confused with former Congressman Richard Hanna from Orange County California, a Democrat who served in Congress from 1962 to 1974 and was thereafter convicted and sentenced to federal prison. Hanna pled guilty to conspiring to commit bribery involving a businessman who supplied surplus rice to South Korea. That Hanna served a year in federal prison and died in 2001.
Today’s Patriot Act vote had a final tally of 275 yes and 114 no, with 14 reps not voting. 210 Republicans and 65 Democrats voted yes; 27 Republicans and 117 Democrats voted no. Three Republicans who voted to renew the Patriot Act last week were among the 14 who did not vote today. They were Burton (IN), Culberson, and Young (FL). Conversely, five out of the 9 total Congressmen who did not vote on February 8th renewal were Republicans. Four joined the call to renew the Patriot Act today: Crawford, Garrett, Lamborn and Posey.
122 Democrats voted no on feb 8th, but 117 voted no today, a net loss of five votes for Democrats opposing the measure.
California Rep. Tom McClintock, who voted yes on the Patriot Act last year during his first Congressional term, has come to realize that the Patriot Act is wrong. he appeared on Judge Andrew Napolitano’s Freedom Watch on Fox, explaining his change of heart and how the Patriot Act “violates and degrades your civil liberties.”
